All artwork has some sort of stimulus, something that inspires the artist to depict their beliefs and emotions on issues that deeply move them. Well, forget that idea! In this piece all I wanted to show was a vase shattered over a chessboard. The background started out as a futuristic city skyline but this simply didn't suit the style of the piece as the fluoro colours of the neon lights clashed with the soft browns in the foreground.
From an utterly horrendous photo which was taken with a 1970's camera over the roof of my house, I was able to salvage the heavenly sky you see in the background. Gives the picture an interesting atmosphere I think.
There is a huge attention to detail in this piece. The curtains are finished off at the bottom and sides with another texture and there is an opacity map on them too which may be difficult to see but looks very nice with the right lighting effects. Also on the chessboard you can actually see tiny water droplets that were a little tedious to make but is a nice touch nonetheless. The water from the vase also spilt over the edge of the board, a realistic touch. I actually used boolean intersections to shatter the vase and with a bit of time it would be possible to actually put the vase back together. The vase really is shattered.
