Just below the Tibetan Libarary in Gangchem Kyishong is the splinded new Nachung Monestery- The seat of Nachung, the state oracle and protector deity of Tibet. Nachung has acted as the spritual guide to the Tibetan government since the 8th centuryn. The physical medium is called Nachung Kuten.
When a medium entersa into a trance like state-clothed in a traditional brocade costume and heavy headdress in precious metals- the protector diety Dorjee Drakten, takes possesion of his body and gives advice and predictions to the Dalai Lama and Tibetans leaders in Exile. He is especially associated with the Dalai Lama's and plays an inportant role in the search for the incarnations of each Dalai Lama. About seventy monks study here and carry on the secret and sacret rituils surrounding the medium.
The original Nechung Monestery in Lhasa had 115 monks in 1959. The monestry was rased to the ground during the Central Revolution which devested Tibet between 1966 and 1976. How ever six monks managed to escaped to continue the traditions of the Nachung institution. Nachung Monestry also runs a popular caf'e and guesthouse.
