A Walk Through Joey's Mind
by Melody
Authors Note: This story is a continuation from A Walk Through Hell, however, the writing style is a little different. There will be two different types of writing in this story. It's a little hard to understand, but it gets the point across nicely. Hopefully I haven't scared anyone off, so enjoy!
Alright, let's think about this logically. These guys believe I am Mitch Leery's daughter. No matter how many times I try to convince them, they don't listen. I am stuck in this cement room with nothing but an air mattress. There's not much chance for escape here. I wish I knew who this guy was. I know this guy isn't directly involved, he's just here to watch me. But the other guy, I've seen him before. I can't remember when or where, but God he's so familiar. Why am I here? What does any of this have to do with me? Why can't these guys just leave me alone! I haven't done anything to them. I don't even know them. I wish I didn't ramble so much in my head. I think I'm driving myself crazy. I wonder what Dawson's doing now. Probably in the sympathetic arms of Jenn. She's telling him everything will be fine. Meanwhile he's all over her, enjoying the attention. No, Dawson wouldn't do that. But how should I know? I don't know Dawson anymore. Why am I thinking about Dawson? I should be thinking about how the hell to get out of here. There's no way out of this room except through the door. And that stupid guard is always here. If it's not him, it's the other one. And then there's the big guy...I know I know him. Why is my life so complicated? Are these guys really after Mr. Leery? Why take me? They should have taken his wife. But then again Mr. Leery would probably welcome that. He would be greatful to have his wife gone. Maybe not. Maybe he does love her. How should I know? It makes you wonder why you have weird thoughts at times like these. I wish I could talk, because all this talking in my head is going to drive me crazy! Anyway, let's see what else I can figure out. I know this room is starting to smell from whatever that guy ate. And these random thoughts are the only things keeping me from screaming, or crying, or throwing myself against the wall until I knock myself out. Are these guys going to kill me? Great, one of them is coming over here. If he tries anything, I'm gonna kick him where it hurts.
"Are you enjoying your stay?"
What the hell do you think. You think I like sitting here with no where to go? "Yeah, it's great."
"Don't worry, we will have you home in no time."
This guy is such a jerk. "How many times do I have to tell you that's not my family?" Apparently the hearing aid isn't working today, cause this guy don't listen.
"You are not very convincing. Even if it's not your family, they are offering to pay my money. Have you figured out what this is about yet?"
"No." Not that I haven't thought about it. But what kind of idiot would kidnap someone without being sure they have the right person.
"But you do recognize me."
"A little." Great going Joey. Now he's gonna kill me because I know his face.
"Maybe you should watch the news a little more. I have a phone call to make. Sit tight, it's almost over."
That's it! That guy Dawson's mom was with. Bob! Oh great, I am in so much trouble. This guys a real psycho. Dawson! Where are you?
~*~*~*~*~*~
Dawson Leery sat on his couch flipping through the television channels. There was nothing on, nothing to destract him from the frightening reality that was going on around him. His normal house, himself and his parents, now included three guards, two FBI agents, one annoying police detective, several different types of technical equipment, Joey's sister and Bodi, Jenn and her grandmother, Pacey, and Mitch Leery's lawyer and accountant. This quiet house looks like a wake.
Dawson decided to go outside for some air. A guard followed. "Do you guys really have to follow me?"
"It's for your own protection."
"If I need protection, you'll be the first one I call."
Dawson sat down on the front porch steps. His mother came up behind him. "How are you holding up?"
"Just great Mom. Considering your boyfriend kidnapped my girlfriend. All things considered, I'm doing good. Yourself?"
"Dawson, I never meant for this to happen. I hope you don't blame me for this."
"Yeah, well if you never cheated on Dad, this wouldn't be happening. I don't get it. How you can pretend you have a wonderful life here yet sleep with someone else."
"Dawson, everybody makes mistakes in life. It's up to the people around them to forgive."
"Forgiveness is easy. Forgetting is the hard part. But I'm sure Dad reminds you of that. What's it like Mom? Having Bob and then coming home to Mitch? Do you enjoy it?"
"Okay. Maybe I deserved that. But you can't hate me forever Dawson. I am still your mother."
"I know. I'm reminded of it everyday. But you're right. Everybody makes mistakes. And your mistake could cost Joey her life."
Jenn came outside and looked at Dawson. "There's been another phone call."
Dawson and his mother ran inside. Mitch Leery spoke to them. "I am to meet him at the pier. Hand over the money. They will deliver Joey after the amount has been confirmed."
Dawson spoke. "You can't do that! They'll never give Joey back. Dad, you can't trust him!"
Mitch glared at his wife. "Ask your mother whether he's trustworthy."
"Mitch, that isn't fair."
"Neither is what Joey's going through. Dawson, there is one more option."
"What's that?"
Agent Mulder came up behind Mr. Leery. "They gave us the option of letting you go with them. To make sure Joey comes back."
"Fine, I'll do it."
Agent Mulder spoke up. "Dawson, we need to discuss this first."
"There's nothing to discuss. I'll go."
Pacey spoke up. "I might be an amatuer at this kidnapping business. But is it wise to give them another hostage?"
Agent Scully spoke this time. "That's what we want to discuss. Dawson, this will be dangerous. There's no knowing what will happen. We usually would never allow someone to be put in this position. But you have expressed your concerns, and we need to make sure Joey comes back. You will have a tracer device on you. And they know this. If you do not return with Joey within the specified time limits, we will have that place crawling with FBI agents."
"But you're going to do that anyway, aren't you?"
"It's best if you do not know what we are planning. In case they try to make you talk."
"If you guys come busting in there, Joey will be in danger."
Agent Mulder seemed agitated. "We know how to do our job. This is a waste of time. Forget the boy. Let's do this by the book."
Dawson spoke. "No. I'll cooperate. I'm just concerned."
"And that's the only reason we are letting you go. We could just put the tracer in the money."
Jenn came up to Dawson. "Are you sure you want to do this Dawson? It's dangerous."
"I have to help Joey. Anything is better than sitting here. Not that you care anyway. Let's get this going."
Now it was Bess' turn to speak. "She is right Dawson. I'd hate to lose you both." She started to cry. "Dawson, let it go. Let them do what they can to get her back."
Dawson gave her a hug. "I'm going. And I'll bring her back. Don't you worry."
~*~*~*~*~*~
God, why is it so cold in here? It's getting harder to breath. I can't take this much longer. What is taking them so long? Maybe they forgot about me. Maybe I'll be stuck here forever. There's so many things I still have to do. So many things I still have to say. I have so much to tell Dawson. I need to talk to Jenn. And my dad. I really wanted to see him. I have so much to tell him. And I still have to change the flowers at my mom's grave. I have to at least say goodbye to everybody. God I'm so tired. I refuse to go to sleep. I will not be shot in my sleep like the movies. Maybe I'm sleeping now. Maybe this is all a dream. That's it, I must be dreaming. This can't be happening. Not when Dawson and I are finally together. Someone wake me up from this horrible nightmare.
Bob entered the room. "So how's my little guest?"
You know what you can go do with yourself pal. I have nothing to say to you, so why talk to me?
"Oh, not talking are we? Just wanted to let you know what's going on. Mitch has agreed to pay my ransom. And a little side note you might be interested in. He's sending his own son with the money. That was an added bonus. I didn't ask for it. Show's you how much Mitch cares about his family. His wife is a slut, and now he sends his own son out to get killed. Nice man that Leery."
Dawson! Why on earth would he want to come here? He knows better than that. Oh God Dawson, what are you doing? Don't come here. Please God don't let him come here.
"Still silent huh? Well that's okay. I'm sure you will talk to the boy when he gets here. Until then, sit back and relax. It's almost over."
Like you'll let me go. Like you'll let Dawson go. This is your revenge isn't it. Kill me and Dawson to get back at her. To get back at Mr. Leery. That's it. We'll both die together. I am not ready to die. What am I supposed to do? There's nothing here to help me. I have no idea what to do, I've never been in this situation. There's this mattress. I could deflate it and suffocate the guard. But he would hear me, see me. And then what? There's no way to know what's on the other side of that door. There could be more of them. What am I supposed to do? Wait for Dawson. Dawson will know what to do. Wait for Dawson. But what if they kill him? Then what? I have to think of something fast. For me and Dawson. If not, I'll see you soon Mom.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Dawson waited on the pier with the suitcase. He watched as the boat approached. Bob wasn't in it. There was a different man. "You must be the Leery boy."
"Yeah. You're not Bob."
"He's back with Joey. Let's get this over with."
Dawson got into the boat and they left.
Back at the house, Mulder and Scully listened to the conversation. Mitch Leery looked concerned. "Why wasn't Bob there?"
"We figured as much. He didn't want to be out in broad day light. Sharp shooters and all. He's a smart guy."
"He'll be smart as long as he doesn't touch my son or Joey."
~*~*~*~*~*~
I can't stay here much longer. This guy keeps cleaning his gun. He's gonna use it, I know he is. How do I warn Dawson? I have to get out of here. There's nothing here though. There's got to be. "Hey guy."
"What do you want?"
Your head on a silver platter? "I need to use the bathroom."
"I don't think so kid. Not right now."
Don't call me kid. "It's really an emergency. Please?"
He let out a big sigh. "Let's go."
Sucker. Now's my chance. There's nothing really out here in the hallway like I though. No one else is here. Good. But where's Bob? He has to be here somewhere. Unless he's outside. I wish I knew where I was. We must be close to the water, I can smell that. "Thanks." There's not much here in the bathroom either. I know. I'll take one of these cups, fill it with really hot water, and throw it in his face. That will stop him. But then what? I have no idea. Run for my life. That's what I'll do. Come on water, you're not hot enough yet.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Dawson watched as the boat arrived to a little building on the other side of the creek. Conversations had been silent the ride over. Dawson held on to the money the entire time. He made sure to watch the way they went in case he had to get back on his own. The building was only a couple of miles from his house. He was greatfull for that, because he knew his way around this creek pretty well. His main concern was Joey. He knew he probably wouldn't get out of this safely with Joey. Hopefully the building is as small on the inside as it looks on the outside.
~*~*~*~*~*~
"Hurry up in there, there's no time for this."
Why don't you just shut up. You will wish I stayed in here forever when I get done with you. The water is almost hot enough. I have no idea what I'll do after I throw is at you, but I'll think of something. Okay, are you ready? "I'm almost done."
"Good, you shouldn't be in there in the first place. Bob will have my head. Let's go."
"I'm coming." Let's see how you like this.
~*~*~*~*~*~
The man got out of the boat and Dawson followed. The building was about a half mile from where they docked the boat. The closer Dawson got to it, the bigger the building was. Definately not an advantage...
Joey threw the water at the guard. He cursed and screamed. Joey kicked him hard between his legs. The man collapsed on the ground as Joey ran. She went down a corridor following the only bit of light she saw. She ran and ran to the door at the end of the hallway. As she pushed open the door, she was grabbed from behind. "Gotcha, you little brat."
"Leave me alone!" She struggled to break free but Bob was too strong. She elbowed him in the stomach and got free. But he quickly recovered. She was out the door, however, running for her life. She saw Dawson ahead. "Dawson! It's a trap! Run!!!"
"Joey!" Dawson didn't listen to her. He ran towards her. But Bob had caught up with her once again.
"Just give me the money kid, this can all be over."
"Yeah, right. Then what happens to us?"
"Don't you worry about that." He pulled out a gun and held it to Joey's head. "Now give me the money."
Joey shivered in fear. "Dawson, just run!"
"Shut up you little brat!" Bob knocked her on the head with the gun. She fell to the ground.
"Joey!" Dawson stared at Bob. "Why are you doing this? Just to get back at my mother? I hardly think this is the way to accomplish anything, or to get my mother back."
"I never wanted your mother. I just wanted information, which she gladly gave me while in my bed. I don't suppose she ever gave you the details of our relationship."
"I don't really want to hear them. I'll give you your money, if you promise me Joey and I can go."
"Promise? Okay kid, I promise. Scouts honor. Now give me the money!"
Joey was slowly waking at the feet of Bob. "Dawson, don't."
"I have to Joey. For you." Dawson walked towards Bob and handed him the suitcase. "I'm sure it's all there."
Bob just smiled. "I'll verify that for myself." He opened the suitcase and looked inside. He leafed through the money, making sure it was all real. "Seems to be in order." He grabbed Joey's arm and pulled her up. He pushed her towards Dawson.
Dawson held her until she regained her balance. "Can we go now?"
Bob smiled once again. "I don't think so." He pointed the gun at Joey, and then at Dawson. "Now which one should go first?"
Joey squeezed Dawson's hand and looked at him. He returned her glance and followed her eyes to the suitcase of money, and then to a large rock at their feet. Dawson looked back at Bob. "You promised we could go."
"Never believe in promises. I'm sure your dad has told you that. Your mother betrayed him, it's only fair I betray you."
At that moment Joey ran for the suitcase as Dawson got the rock and threw it at Bob. He caught the rock, however off guard, and Dawson and Joey ran for the boat. Bob shot his gun at them. He hit Joey in the arm, but they kept running. Several shots went off. They heard Bob and his two guards chasing them. They kept running until they reached the boat. Joey got in and ducked while Dawson pushed it away from shore. The shots continued. Dawson jumped in the boat and ducked. When he could no longer hear the shots, Dawson poked his head out. They were at least a half mile away now. He looked at Joey. She was curled up in the corner of the boat holding on to her arm. "Joey, you okay?"
She didn't say anything. Dawson went over to her and looked at her arm. There was blood everywhere. Dawson removed one of his shirts and wrapped Joey's arm. "That should hold it until we get back."
"Thank you Dawson."
"Are you okay? Besides this I mean?"
She didn't answer right away. She stared off at the water for a few moments. "I'm cold." She paused a moment. "I can't feel my arm."
Dawson looked at her with concern. "You've lost a lot of blood Joey. You'll be okay. We're almost home." He put his arm around her. "Hold on till we get home."
