The New Girl

by Melody

Michelle walked down the streets of Capeside. She was new in this town, temporarily anyway. The new town she was brought to looked quiet enough, trouble free enough. However, Michelle never knew a town without trouble.
Michelle Caron came from a rough home. She was born in Manchester, New Hampshire. That was a quiet enough town too. However, for Michelle, trouble seemed to follow her. Her parents were broke. Her mother, a hypochondriac, spent all her fathers money on the latest drug treatment for whatever ailed her that week. By the time the sixteenth disease had invaded her mothers body, they could no longer afford the doctor bills. Her father finally wised up and left them. Michelle was an only child. Rather than stay with her mother who no doubt would constantly complain and moan in pain, Michelle ran away. She was only fourteen, but staying there would have killed her. So Michelle took rides from anyone who was going anywhere. She ended up in some small towns, never been caught by social services or the police. And finally she came to Capeside.
She was now twenty two. Had enough money saved in the bank to take a break from work. She tried to settle down in a few other places, but her mother always caught up with her. So she kept working, kept running.
Michelle approached the local high school. She went into the main office. "I'd like to register."
The lady behind the desk looked at her. "Where are your parents?"
"My parents are dead. I just moved here and would like to finish high school."
"Do you have transcripts from your previous school?"
"Sure." Michelle dug through her bag and handed a folder to the woman. "Everything should be there."
The woman went through the papers. "Everything seems to be okay. I'll need you to fill out some paperwork." She handed Michelle a stack of papers and a pen. "You can sit down over there." She pointed to a bunch of chairs.
"Great. Thanks." Michelle sat down and looked at the paperwork. Previous addresses, schools, guardianship, Michelle was the expert at making this stuff up. And a small town like this? Don't think they will do much checking.
Dawson Leery walked into the office and approached the front desk. The woman smiled. "Mr. Leery. How nice of you to come in today."
"I had some stuff to take care of. Can I sign in?"
"Actually, since you're here, you can do me a favor. We're real busy today. That young woman over there?" She pointed towards Michelle. "Can you show her around the school when she's finished?"
"Sure." Dawson walked over to Michelle. "Hey,"
Michelle looked up. "Hey yourself."
"I'm Dawson. Ms. Lynch over there said you need someone to show you around."
"And you so kindly are volunteering?"
"Well yeah, I guess I am. So, you ready?"
"Just give me a minute." Michelle finished filling out her paperwork and handed it to Ms. Lynch. "Will you need anything else?"
"This should do it. Just come by tomorrow and see a guidance counselor to work out your schedule."
"Great. Thanks." Michelle walked over to Dawson. "My name's Michelle by the way."
"So you do have a nice streak in you?"
"Not always, be careful."
Dawson began to show Michelle around the school. "So, where are you from?"
"No where important. Let's not talk about me okay? What grade are you in?"
"I'm at the bottom of the totem pole here. First year. You?"
"Not sure where they will stick me. Depends I guess."
"You don't know what grade you're in?"
"Look Dawson. I've been to quite a few schools in the last few years. I don't even know anymore."
"Hey, sorry. Didn't mean to hit a nerve or anything. So what are you doing tonight?"
"What's it to you?"
"Figured you would want someone to show you around town. And I am the best person for the job."
"Oh really? Says who?"
"Well, I do I guess. What'ya say? Sound like fun?"
"Since I'm not doing anything else, yeah okay."
"Great. When and where?"
"Do you know where Skylight Drive is?"
"Sure, down behind the dirt trails."
"That's it. My apartment is number twelve. Come by around seven?"
"I will be there. Nice meeting you Michelle."
"You too Dawson." Michelle watched as Dawson snuck into one of his classes. Be careful Michelle, he's much younger than you.

"Hey Dawson, wait up!" Pacey yelled. Dawson waited at his locker for Pacey. "Where were you first period?"
"I was with Michelle. Have you met her? She's new."
"Don't think so, what does she look like?"
"She has long blond hair, very deep blue eyes, kind of Joey's height, nice body, the usual."
"Alright Dawson! You don't waste any time do you?"
"What is that supposed to mean Pacey? I just showed her around the school. No big deal."
"But you are going to see her again."
"How did you know that?"
"Because deep down my friend you are a true dog. So when is the big date, tonight?"
"It's not a date. I'm just showing her around town."
"Night on the town, huh? And what does Jenn and Joey think about this?"
"Think about what?" Joey and Jenn walked up behind the pair. "What's going on?"
Pacey laughed. "I'll let you handle this one. I gotta run. Have fun!" Pacey took off down the hallway.
Jenn spoke. "Dawson, what's up?"
"Nothing's up. There's a new girl at the school and I'm showing her around town tonight. What is the big deal?"
Joey laughed. "Jeez Dawson, you with any girl is a big deal."
"Thanks a lot Joey, from someone who's supposed to be my friend."
"I am your friend Dawson, that's why it's so much fun to pick on you. So, is she pretty?"
"What does that have to do with anything?"
Joey just looked at Jenn and laughed. Jenn said, "nothing Dawson. See you later." They walked away leaving a very confused Dawson behind.

Dawson arrived at Michelle's at exactly seven. Michelle invited him in. "Come on it, sorry about the mess."
"That's okay." Dawson walked in. There were boxes everywhere waiting to be unpacked. Most of the furniture was set up. "You live here with your parents?"
Michelle laughed nervously. "No, I live here alone. My parents are dead."
Dawson felt his face turn red. "Sorry."
"Hey, no big deal. You get used to it after a while. You want something to drink?"
"No thanks." Dawson sat down on the couch. "So what do you want to do tonight?"
Michelle returned from the kitchen and sat next to Dawson. "Look, Dawson. I hope I didn't give you the wrong impression about going out tonight. This isn't like a date or anything. I just thought it would be nice to meet some new people."
"I understand. That's all I took it for."
"Great. You ready?"
"Sure." They left the apartment and walked around the town for hours. Michelle was silent for the most part, letting Dawson do the story telling. He told her about Pacey, Jenn, and Joey. Told her about the past relationship with Jenn. Dawson couldn't believe he was saying all this, but Michelle was a great listener. "I feel like I've known you forever. I can tell you anything."
"Yeah, I have that effect on people. I'm really glad we did this Dawson. I had a good time."
"You want to come back to my house? Watch a movie?"
"Sure, I'd like that."
Michelle and Dawson went to his house. Waiting in his bedroom was Joey. "Hey Jo, I'd like you to meet Michelle. Michelle, this is Joey, my best friend."
"Hey Joey."
"Hi."
Dawson spoke, "So Joey, what's up?"
"Just wanted to see what you were doing. I can come back later."
"We were gonna watch a movie, want to join us?"
"I don't want to intrude or anything."
Michelle spoke. "If anyone's intruding, it's me. I can go Dawson."
"Don't be silly. Joey, Michelle, you both stay."
There was a knock at the door. It was Dawson's father. "Dawson, Jenn's downstairs."
Joey rolled her eyes. "The more the merrier."
Dawson came back upstairs with Jenn. "Jenn, this is Michelle."
Jenn smiled. "Hi. I hear you'll be going to our school?"
"Yeah. Eventually."
"I've only been here a few months myself. We'll talk later. Dawson, I did want to talk to you, but I guess it can wait."
"Talk now."
"Nah, it's a little crowded. Maybe tomorrow."
Joey spoke up. "I'll walk out with you Jenn. You two have fun."
Dawson moaned. "You guys don't have to leave."
Joey just smiled. "Don't worry Dawson, we'll be back."
Joey walked out with Jenn. "Seems like Capeside is getting a little crowded."
Jenn chuckled. "Not Capeside Joey, just Dawson's bedroom."
Upstairs, Michelle apologized to Dawson. "I didn't mean to scare your friends away."
"Don't worry, they're always that weird. It had nothing to do with you. I told you the whole situation. Between Jenn, Joey and I. Things were weird long before you. So, what do you want to watch?"
