Musical Instruments for Kids

These three musical instruments are easy to make and fun to play!

Kazoo
Materials: one toilet tissue roll, tissue paper (4" x 4"), rubber band, water based paints, brushes, stickers
Instructions: Decorate the toilet tissue roll with paint. When dry, add stickers, glitter, glue on sequins, etc. for decoration. Stretch tissue paper tight over one end of the roll and secure with rubber band.

Shaker
Materials: one toilette tissue roll or one paper towel roll, 1/2 cup dried beans, peas or pasta, heavy construction paper (two 4" x 4" squares), two rubber bands, water based paint, bushes, stickers, glitter, etc.
Instructions: Decorate the toilet tissue roll or paper towel roll with paint. When dry, add stickers, glitter, glue on sequins, etc. for decoration. Stretch construction paper tight over one end of the roll and secure with rubber band. Pour beans, peas or pasta into the roll. Secure the other piece of construction paper over the open end and secure with rubber band.

Tambourine
Materials: two paper plates, 1/2 cup dried beans, peas or pasta, white glue, water based paints, brushes, stickers. Optional: craft bells, yarn
Instructions: Decorate the bottoms of the paper plates with paint. When dry, add stickers, glitter, glue on sequins, etc. for decoration. Turn one paper plate upright and place beans, peas or pasta in the plate. Apply glue around the edges of the plate. Place the second plate (with bottom facing up towards you) onto the first and press edges together securely. Let dry. If you like, you can use the yarn to attach bells all around the edges of the paper plate tambourine - Use a craft knife to poke holes into the edge of the tambourine. Cut 2" lengths of yarn. String one bell onto each piece of yarn. Insert one piece of yarn through each hole. Tie yarn securely in a knot.
