Rule Modification

- Oct. 13, 2000:

The Canadian Hockey League announced today that the icing rule used in CHL games has been modified. The modification to the icing rule is as follows:

"On any icing play, if the puck passes through or touches any part of the goal crease the icing rule shall be in effect."

Previously, on any icing situation, if the puck passed through or touched any part of the goal crease, icing was waived off. The lone exception to this rule was if the goaltender was pulled for an extra attacker, and the puck went through or touched any part of the crease, icing remained in effect.

The new modification will bring a consistent approach for application of the icing rule.

Each of the three leagues that form the CHL, the Ontario Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League, will determine the actual date that the modification will take place in their respective league.
