WHL Eastern all-star team
Calgary - The Western Hockey League today announced the Eastern Conference All - Star team for the 2000 Shaw - WHL All Star Classic, which will be held in Kelowna on January 19, 2000.
The Eastern Conference All - Star team, which will be coached by Dean Clark of the Calgary Hitmen, has five players from Calgary, three players from Swift Current, and two players each from Kootenay, Moose Jaw, and Prince Albert.
The goaltending duties will be handled by Bryce Wandler of the Swift Current Broncos and Kyle Kettles of the Medicine Hat Tigers. Wandler has led the Broncos to first place in the East Division while Kettles has led a much improved Tigers team through the first half of the campaign.
The defence will feature the Calgary Hitmen's Matt Kinch, Steve McCarthy of the Kootenay Ice and the Regina Pats' Barrett Jackman who were members of Canada's World Junior team. In addition to the three members of the Canadian World Junior team, the defence corps will include Lawrence Nycholat of the Swift Current Broncos, Moose Jaw Warriors' Scott Schoneck and Jeff Zorn of the Saskatoon Blades.
The offense is led by the Hitmen's Chris Nielsen, and Jamie Lundmark of the Warriors who were members of the Canadian World Junior team. The offense also includes the Prince Albert Raiders' Milan Kraft and Michal Sivek and the Ice's Jaroslav Svoboda who all played for the Czech Republic Junior team at the World Junior Championships in Sweden.
The Eastern Conference forwards are rounded out by Kris Beech, Pavel Brendl and Brad Moran (Calgary), Radek Duda (Lethbridge), Justin Mapletoft (Red Deer), Brad Twordik (Brandon), and Layne Ulmer (Swift Current).
