Wild Life Rehabilitation

Hello, Im Shelley and I am a wildlife rehabilitator licened in New York State.

I had a busy spring this year . I took in got healthy and released about 9 Cotton tail Rabbits, 6 Red Squirrels,2 Pigeons with broken wings, some kids shot them with Bee Bee guns. 5 Starlings, 2 Robins,A Grouse, 3 Mallards,a couple of Wood Ducks,a Blue jay and my favorite was a fawn. It is so rewarding to release them . and hope they have a chance.

This is a picture of me with BeeBee the fawn. BeeBee was found on the side of a busy highway .You could tell she was only days old and she couldn't stand on her own. Her mother most likely was hit by a car. There was a group of people watching over her till the State Police came and called us.At first she was put in a pen with 4 other fawns but she was so weak that the other fawns chewed the tops of her ears off. So she needed to be in a separate pen ,So I took her in .She was on her death bed when I got her. The Vet. put her on antibiotics and didn't now if she would make it.A fawn should be able to eat 3 1/2 cups of formula twice a day ,but BeBe would only eat 4oz. at a time so I feed her 4 times a day.Slowly but surly she was up to the full 7 cups a day and more.I really didn't think she would make it ,but she did and she's very healthy a little bit small but happy .I released her in the woods and field right behind the barn where her pen is. She was coming out once a day to see me and to eat the food I put out. Now she has grown so much all of her spots are gone . And the best of all is she made friends with a group of deer that hang on our land. The tell tale ears let me know it's her.I get tears in my eyes everytime I see her out there with them being so happy.

What to do if you find a injured ,Orphaned or displaced animal or bird

  • Put into a dark warm place. like a cardboard box
  • Put in a heat sorce. You can fill a soda bottle with hot water and cover it with a cloth.
  • Call a near by Licensed Rehabilitator as soon as possible.
  • Do not try to feed or water
  • If it's a baby duck or goose etc. do not put in water. Water will kill them when they are young.
  • Do not handle Racoon , Bats or Skunks. They are very proned to Rabies . Call public Heath on these animals
  • Do not handle any more than possible.Stress is the killer.
  • Do not try to raise it yourself . Babies need speical formulas. You need permits to keep things and the fines are high.
  • BE SAFE wild animals and birds have weapons which include talons, teeth, hooves, claws, beaks, unpleasent sprays, some even vomit on predators. Most wildlife carry bateria, viruses and parasites that can be transmitted to humans or pets.
  • Even injured animals will fight to protect themselves. If you feel you need to help, use heavy gloves and goggles. Do Not touch wildlife, but guide into container such as a heavy cardboard box with air holes.
  • Be Very CAREFUL with RABIES; if the animal is acting strange in any way DO NOT RESCUE! call your local Public Health.
  • Rescue at your own rick these are wild animals and can hurt you or make you sick! better yet call someone that knows what they are doing
