Substance Kiss

can i get you anything to eat or to drink

or to amuse your mouth in any way

that's not the only part of you i wish to please

but if your lips are happy it's a good place to start

in the dark i read a love poem for you

you say that's real sweet but this will never do

you tell me you think the world of me

but this night should stay special and unique

refrain:

and you rest on the substance kiss

you rest on the substance kiss

do you know the kind of bliss

i get from the substance kiss

i dreamt of you happy with your best friend

you gave every shoulder you could lend

still i stumbled clumsy at your fingers

distracted by birds folded in paper

refrain

why do your eyes play those games

with the hollow of my breastbone when it's already so frightened?

how do your crooked lips force my insides straight?

would your mouth bleed just to be close to mine?

are there things you wish you could say?

do you know how beautiful you are to me?

refrain

do you know the kind of bliss

that turns you inside out

it's here, it's here

sarah says: Substance Kiss is the hidden track on "broken like a starfish". it wasn't originally intended to be on the album. it was written when recording had already started and, after playing it at a couple shows, i realized that it couldn't NOT be on the cd. my only six string song. it's about that remarkable phenomenon where someone is telling you that they love you, they think you're a wonderful, beautiful person, but somehow, they just don't want to be your boyfriend.
