SPITFIRE Mk Vb BM597

Spitfire Mk.Vb BM597.

The combat veteran Spitfire Mk.Vb BM597 was built at Castle Bromwich and delivered on 26th April 1942. It served with 315 and 317 (Polish) Squadrons RAF at Woodvale before sustaining damage whilst landing on 13th February 1943. It was repaired, but is thought to have seen no further action. After the war BM597 was assigned to several 'gate guardian' postings finishing up at RAF Church Fenton. Acquired by Historic Aircraft Collection in 1993, it was restored to original specification and flies now in the colours of 317 Squadron, though in an earlier camouflage paint scheme.

We are constantly looking for more wartime photographs and historical information on this aircraft, and if anyone has any of these or pilot log-book entries showing BM 597, we would welcome hearing from you. Spitfire BM597 can be found in Hangar 4 at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.
Spitfire BM597 is available for air displays, memorial flights, TV and film work and other promotional activities. Please contact Sarah Pepper or Guy Black at:
