No matter how good a pilot you were, your ship woz gonna take some hits at some time. Before the enemy weapons started tearing your hull to pieces, you needed something to absorb some of the damage. This woz the job of the shields, and the better your shield, the longer you lasted to squeeze off those extra few rounds and maybe gain a few more credits.
