Chapter 4

These two readings on music are accompanied by clips of the various kinds of music.

A Brief Music History: Listen to a few examples from each period so that you understand the musical ideas of the time. There has been some problem with the host site for the music this week. If clicking on a piece of music gets you a "Not at this address" message, then try copying the URL directly into the address bar in your browser and hitting the "Enter" button. You'll stay on the course web page, but will open a media player with the music. This is clumsy, but effective.

Early 20th Century Music: Here are composers mentioned in Chapter 4 as the vanguard of a new kind of music. Listen to all of these examples, and see whether you agree that what they were writing was new and different. A couple of these links may operate better than those in the first reading; they're hosted on a different site. When they don't, the plan above works here too.

Medieval and Renaissance Art: If you need a refresher, this is the exhibit you looked at last fall before we went to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Viewing this is optional.

18th and 19th Century Art: This will bring you up to the early 20th century. Look at a few examples in each period along the way.

Early 20th Century Art: This is the artist's version of the music you listened to a bit ago. View all of these examples, looking for common ideas and features between the music and art of the time.
