At the OSI Russ gave them a list of all the places that had gone out of business in the past month. Those that were vacant and those that had items waiting to be picked up. It was a lot longer than any of them thought. “I have an idea.” Steve suggested. “Why don’t we divide the list up? We can cover more ground that way.”

“I don’t know Steve, with Dine on the lose….” Oscar began

“You forget, I’m a marked man.” Steve reminded. “Now you two take this area of the City, Russ you take this area. And I’ll cover this one.”

“Ok but we meet back here in an hour no matter what.” Oscar stated. “Only the four of us know that.” Oscar spoke when he saw the strange looks his friends gave him.

Agreeing they stepped out onto the street. Russ dropped everyone off in their appointed search areas.

Steve headed up the Street he headed in the direction of the garage. Steve had just pulled around the corner when he saw his car parked out side the garage. ‘There’s my car’ Steve thought. He pulled to a stop across the street from the garage when he saw Dine step into the garage.

‘There he is.’ Steve quickly followed Dine into the garage. He looked around and saw Dine and Franklin disappear behind a door. Steve continued to follow them.

He followed them down the basement. When the two men stopped Steve called out “All right Dine, Franklin. It’s over where’s Danny?” Steve was somewhat transfixed on how much Dine resembled him. ‘No wonder he fooled Oscar.’ He thought.

Franklin turned to Dine and smiled. “He’s got us Dine.” Franklin smirked.

“Yea I guess you’re right Franklin. Should we tell him where the kid is?”

“I guess I’ll leave that up to you.” Franklin tried to keep the game going.

“I’m not sure.” Dine also wanted to play a little longer.

“You’re a piece of work Dine.” Steve stated. “Making Dan think I’m the one who hurt him.”

“You know what you’re problem is Austin? You just don’t know when to give up. Aw come on Franklin. Let’s stop playing around and kill this guy right now.”

“Come on Franklin.” Steve persisted. “I’m tired too. You take me to Danny now!!”

“Follow me Col. Austin he’s over here.” He led Steve to the freezer “He’s right in there.” Franklin opened the door

Steve moved to the door. “Dan are you all right?” Steve called not wanting to step in for fear they would shut the door behind him.

While Steve stood looking for Dan, Franklin struck Steve on the back of the head before Steve knew it was a trap. Then he drug Steve into the freezer. “There you are Col. All nice and cozy.” He stepped out and turned the freezer down as low as it would go.

“Now,” Franklin said to Dine. “You take the boy and go home; you are now Austin for the moment anyway.”

“Sounds good to me” Dine took Dan out of the pipe.

“Are you alright Dan?” He asked.

“I think so Steve.” Dan replied. “But didn’t you…”

“No Dan that was John Dine. I’m sure your father told you…”

“Yes of course.” Dan replied. “He’s told me about him.”

“Good then let’s to home.” Dine smiled….

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Dine headed for Oscar’s house. “I’m sure your father will be glad you’re alright.” Dine spoke

“Yea, I’m sure.” Dan didn’t feel right, something told him something was still very wrong but dismissed it. But the feeling kept gnawing at him. He made a mental note to himself to ask his father if they had applied the ‘tattoo’ to Steve. That’s what Marc was calling it.

They walked into the empty house. “Gee. I wonder where everybody is.” Dan wondered

“Maybe they’re at the office.” Dine suggested.

“I don’t know its Saturday….” Dan thought for a moment. “But I guess with all that’s been going on maybe they are at the office.”

Oscar, Rudy and Russ had just arrived back at Oscar’s office. They were wondering where Steve was when Oscar’s private phone rang.

Oscar picked it up. “Steve?”

“No dad, it’s me Dan.” Danny spoke

“Dan, where are you?” Oscar got ready to write down the address.

“I’m home.” Dan told him.

“Home, how did you get home?” Oscar wondered

“Steve brought me home.” Dan explained.

“Steve? Is he there?”

“Right here” Dan handed him the phone. “It’s dad.”

“Ok” Dine took the phone. “Oscar. I found Danny.”

“Steve we were supposed to meet here.” Oscar reminded.

“I know.” Dine lied. “I just figured since I had Dan, He’d be better off at home….”

“I’m on my way.” Oscar hung up the phone. “That was Steve He has Dan at the house.”

“Well that’s good news.” Rudy sighed.

“Let’s get to the house.” The three left and headed for Oscar’s house.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

In the freezer Steve started to come around from the bump on his head.

“Its about time Austin” Franklin’s voice was hard. He was dressed in a parka with boots and gloves. “You take long naps.”

“Only when I’m forced” Steve barely got out.

“I just wanted to keep you up on what’s going on. Dine took your friend’s son home. As far as they’re concerned he is Col. Austin.”

“So that’s your plan eh?” Steve could still barely speak.

“That’s it. Nothing would please me more than to see you dead, but I really want you to suffer. I’m going to turn the freezer up just a bit. I’m not ready for you to die just yet; in fact I’m not sure just how I want to kill you. I want it to be something special.”

“Why not just get it over with.” Steve muttered.

“Not just yet. Like I said I want you to suffer.” Franklin left the freezer but did as he promised so Steve wouldn’t freeze to death; he kept the temperature just low enough to keep Steve’s bionics inactive.

Steve felt the relief, some what, but he was still unable to move, much less kick the door down. He reached over to pop the heat capsule but remembered he had used it a week before and Rudy hadn’t replaced it yet.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Dine greeted Oscar and Rudy on the front porch. “That was fast.” He commented

“Where’s Danny?” Oscar shouted as he shoved his way past Dine.

“He’s inside he seems fine.” Dine didn’t want to say too much, he was afraid that Oscar would detect Steve’s voice was slightly different.

Oscar and Rudy darted into the house where Dan was sitting on the couch. “You ok son?” Oscar asked sitting next to him.

Dan nodded. “I think so….” He thought for several moments “Rudy I was wondering, since you found out Dine was on the loose, did you…”

“Yea, Dan.” Rudy replied. “We did it last night.”

“Well that’s good” Dan replied. It might not hurt to run the ultra violet light just to make sure.

Rudy nodded. “I’ll do it first thing in the morning.”

“Maybe you should do it now.” Dan suggested.

“I’ll talk to Steve.” Rudy promised.

“Listen Dan” Oscar approached. “Steve wants to get home. I’m going to follow in my car and pick up Matt and Joe at the same time. Do you want to stay here, or ride along?”

“I’ll stay here, I’m really tired. “I think I’ll go on up to bed.” Dan had done his part he had told Rudy his suspicions so he felt comfortable in relaxing.

“You sure you don’t want to ride along.

“I’ll have Rudy stay with you.”

“That’s ok dad I’ll be fine.” Dan assured.

“Well if you’re sure.” Oscar stated.

“I’m sure” Dan headed upstairs and Oscar offered Steve a ride home.

“I appreciate that.” Dine replied.

Oscar dropped Steve off and retrieved Matt and Joey then they headed home. Dine dismissed Linda.

“Thanks for watching them. I can take over from here.”

“Fine Col. Austin if you need anything just call. My number is by the phone.”

“I’ll remember that.” Dine smiled.

“James is sleeping and Marc is watching T.V.” Linda told him.

“Ok, thanks.” Dine held the door for her then began to snoop around the house. He saw a picture of Steve with Jaime and the kids on the coffee table. “Great looking wife Austin” Dine smiled to himself. “I can’t wait for her to get back.”

“You say something dad.” Marc asked.

“Just saying I can’t wait for Jaime to get back.” Dine caught himself

“Oh, yea. By the way when is dinner?”

In just a bit” Dine stated.

“Ok I’m going to go check on James.” Marc headed up the stairs.

“Yea you do that. I’ll get something started for dinner. By the way when did your mother say she was coming back?”

“She said she’d be gone the weekend, remember?” Marc gave him a quizzical look.

“Oh yea right, dinner will be ready in just a few minutes, Ok?” Dine called after Marc

“Right Dad I’ll get James ready.”

Dine headed for the kitchen and started to fix dinner for ‘his children’ He was anticipating the day his ‘wife’ would return.

Marc woke James up from his nap and helped him get cleaned up for diner.

“Is daddy back?” James asked.

“He sure is, he’s down there fixing our dinner.” Marc smiled.

James ran down the steps and into the kitchen. He saw Dine standing next to the stove.

“Well hey there little fella.” Dine greeted “Dinner is just about ready.”

James spun around and started to run out of the kitchen but Marc blocked his path. “Where’s the fire?” Marc asked.

James pointed to Dine.

“Hey dad dinner ready?” Marc asked.

“Just about are you two all cleaned up?”

Marc nodded. “Yea, come on James, let’s get the table set.”

James was glad to get away from this strange man who was trying to look like his daddy; he gladly followed Marc into the dinning room to help set the table.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Steve was feeling much warmer when Franklin stepped in with a plate of food His bionics remained inactive though so he was unable to pounce on Franklin when he walked in the door.

“I fixed you something to eat.” Franklin hissed. “We wouldn’t want you to starve to death now would we, least not yet anyway? Don’t worry the food isn’t drugged or poisoned. Not yet.”

Franklin set the tray down for Steve. Steve picked it up and threw it at Franklin. “I wouldn’t eat anything you fixed.”

“Suit yourself. It’s going to please me to see you dead.”

“Just get out of here.” Steve yelled.

Franklin turned and walked out of the room. But turned before he stepped through the door “to try an escape would be pointless” he spat.

Steve once again began to search the freezer for something, anything that would warm him up. He found nothing.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Dinner at the Austin house was very quiet. Marc and James hardly said three words. When they finished Marc offered to do the dishes. “Want to help James.”

James agreed and Dine retired to the living room.

Before they got started Mac lifted James onto the counter. “Now you want to tell me what’s bothering you.”

James shook his head fearing his brother wouldn’t believe him

“Come on James, we can never get you to be quiet during dinner. Does your tummy hurt, I’ll go tell dad.”

“He’s not my daddy.” James whispered.

“Say what.” Marc gave him a startled look.

“He’s not my daddy.” James repeated.

Marc thought for several moments. Then he remembered Alexi from a couple of years before. Could James be right? Wasn’t his father discussing only the night before about a man named Dine, who had been made to look like Steve.

Marc quickly thought up a plan, he couldn’t trust it. He had to get James away at all costs.

“You wait here I’ll go ask if we can go to Oscar’s and stay.”

James nodded.

Marc quickly finished up the dishes then went to the phone and called Oscar’s house. “Matt this is Marc Can I speak to Dan?”

Matt ran and got his older brother who had just woke up from his nap. “What’s up?” Dan questioned.

Marc told Dan what James had said. “How can I tell?” Marc wondered.

Dan explained that Rudy had tattooed Steve the day before and that Marc would be able to see it with is bionic eye.

“I’ll check. Look tell dad I want to come and see Matt. If this guy is Dine I don’t want him around James.”

“I agree. I’ll send dad to get you.” Dan assured.

“Thanks.” Marc hung up and went up to Steve’s room. The door was open just a crack as Dine was changing clothes. Carefully Marc scanned Dines right shoulder for the birth date. There was nothing there. He knocked on the door “dad can I come in?”

“Sure son,” Dine called.

He told Dine that he wanted to see Matt and Oscar was on his way to pick him and James up.

Relieved he didn’t have to deal with the kids Dine agreed.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

In his freezer/prison Steve’s hunger finally got the best of him and decided to eat a small amount of what Franklin had brought. After he finished as if on cue Franklin walked into the room. “I see you decided to eat something.”

The room started to spin and blur before him. Steve grabbed Franklin by the pant leg “You b s t a d you drugged me”

“So I did.” Franklin sneered as Steve slipped into a deep sleep…

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Marc and James were waiting on the porch when Oscar pulled up. “James, don’t tell Oscar about Steve not being your daddy ok?”

James nodded ready to accept what his older brother told him to do. “I’ll talk to Dan when we get to Oscar’s house.”

The two boys walked down the steps and got into Oscar’s car. “I was hoping to talk to Steve.” Oscar replied when the two boys settled into the back seat.

“He’s on the phone to mom.” Marc told him.

“Oh, ok. I see.” He turned to Marc. “I suppose you want to see Matt.”

“Yea I have some things we need to talk about.” Marc smiled.

“Ok then maybe I’ll call Steve later and tell him you’re safe with me.”

“That won’t be necessary.” Marc chimed in “he said he would watch from the window.”

“Well all right then let’s go.” Oscar drove the boys out to his house. Matt was delighted to see Marc.

“Come on. Let’s play a game.” Matt suggested

“Can’t Matt, this is not a social call. Is Dan in his room?”

Matt nodded. “Yea, what’s up?”

“That’s not Steve at the house. He’s a man named Dine.” Marc explained.

“Really, what makes you say that?” Matt was shocked.

Marc reminded him of the Alexi incident and that Steve too had a double.

“You watch James for a minute; I’m going to go talk to Dan.” Marc slipped into Dan’s room.

Dan was waiting for him. ‘So what’s the…”

“Dan, he’s not Steve. The tattoo is not there.

“I figured as much. I’m going to tell dad right now!” Dan stood from his computer and headed for the door.

“No Dan. Let me handle it. Where did they hold you, I mean could you find it again?” Marc asked.

“Of course you know me and directions. I know exactly where it is. But I still say …”

“I can handle it. I’m going to go help Steve….”

“Come on Marc. Let me tell dad.” Again Dan started for the door.

“No I can do it Dan. I’m not a little baby anymore. Don’t say anything”

“I still say you should tell dad.” Dan pressed.

“Dan I would just ask for the mission anyway.” Marc replied.

“Ok but I’m going with you.” Dan opened his door and stepped into the hall.

“You stay here. It could be very dangerous.” Marc rebuffed

“In that case, I think we should tell dad.” Dan again pushed but knew it would do no good.

“I’ll take care of it, in the mean time after I’m gone call Dine and have him come here. I’ll bring Steve back to the house. After you call him you can tell dad he’s actually Dine, but give me time to get Steve.”

“You sure you know what you’re doing?” Dan sounded concerned for his brother, but at the same time knew he could handle the mission. At least he was telling someone he was leaving, a big change from before.

Before he left he went back into Matt’s room. “James you stay here with Matt and Joey, they’ll take good care of you.”

“I want to come with you.” The three year old stamped his foot.

“No you need to stay here I’m going to go help your daddy.” Marc turned to leave.

Marc had just slipped passed Oscar’s security system when he heard footsteps behind him. He quickly spun around “James I told you to stay with Matt.”

“I go with you. I want my daddy.” James cried.

“Ok, ok. Come on. According to Dan we need to get to Georgetown. That’s where they took him anyway.” Marc reached down and took James’ hand. “You stay with me, and do exactly as I say.”

“I will.” James promised. They hopped on a bus that Marc knew would take them into the city, He could have ran but he had James with him and although James would have had no problem keeping up, he was still only three and tired very quickly.

“You boys are up kind of late aren’t you?” The bus driver asked.

“We’re going to our grandma’s.” Marc lied and gave James a nudge so he wouldn’t say anything.

They sat in the two front seats; Marc watched the road as they drove. He was glad Dan had told them where to get off. Marc pulled the cord about two blocks from the garage because there were houses around.

“We’ll walk the rest of the way, are you up for it?” Marc asked.

“Huh?” James wrinkled his brow.

“I mean can you walk the next two blocks?” Marc smiled.

James nodded. “Let’s find my daddy.”

Marc walked in the direction Dan had told him to go. He could see the garage in the distance.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“What?” Oscar screamed when Danny told him. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

“I told you as soon as I could dad.” Dan tried to explain.

“No! The time for you to have told me was before they left, do you hear me before?” And I thought you were supposed to be smart.”

“Dad, Marc can handle it you know that.” Dan argued. ”Besides whom would you have sent on the mission anyway?”

“I don’t know Russ maybe?” Oscar calmed down a bit. He knew the best man for the job was on the job he only wished they had consulted him first.

“Dad, you’ve sent him on missions by himself before.” Dan reminded. “What’s the difference?”

Oscar thought for a moment. “I guess you’re right, you say Dine is on his way?”

Dan nodded. “Yea he is. Marc told us to try and get him into custody before he gets back with Steve.”

“Ok, by the way, where is James?” Oscar looked around for Steve’s son and clone.

“I don’t know. I haven’t seen him since Marc left.”

“You don’t think he’s with Marc?” Oscar gasped.

“I would suppose that were the case.” Dan surmised

“Oh great, Steve will kill me.” Oscar sighed.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Marc and James reached their goal Marc tried the doorknob of the garage, it was locked. He could see Franklin moving around.

“We have to find another way in.” Marc whispered to James. “Come on let’s go around back.”

The two boys crept around back. They stumbled through the junk yard till Marc was able to find a back way into the building.

“You have to be very quite.” Marc warned.

James only nodded

“Good come on.” Marc forced the door open and they stepped inside. “Now I wonder where he has dad.” Marc thought aloud.

They stood in the shadows watching Franklin move around.

Suddenly Franklin moved toward them. Marc held tight to James. “Shhh” He whispered

They followed Franklin as he went down the basement. Marc watched as Franklin opened the door to the freezer.

“So, that’s it.” Marc thought. He turned to James. You stay here.” He whispered. I’m going to go turn the freezer off to start off with.”

As Marc stepped closer to the door to shut the freezer off, Franklin stepped up behind him “So I see we have a little snoop. I know you; you’re one of Goldman’s kids. I have done a lot of research I know one of Goldman’s son’s is bionic. I would assume that would be you?”

Marc didn’t answer He tried to get away as he turned to run but Franklin smashed him in the head with the butt of his gun and threw him into the freezer as well.

Watching from his hiding place James trembled with fear.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Oscar picked up the phone and first dialed Russ and ordered him to get a team together then he called Rudy and told him what was going on. They were more than ready when Dine arrived at the house.

“Steve. I’m very worried about you.” Oscar began. “I’m afraid Dine will try something else.”

“No need to worry Oscar I can handle everything.” Dine smiled.

While Oscar distracted Dine Rudy filled a syringe with a liquid and quickly injected it to the man’s right arm just to prove to them it was actually Dine they were dealing with.

Dine fell like a rock.

“That ought to keep him out till you get back.” Rudy stated.

“Good. Will you be all right here with the kids?”

Rudy nodded “You go help Marc and Steve.”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

In the freezer Marc slowly came around but he was way to cold to do anything. He moved closer to Steve.

“Dad,” Marc shook Steve. “Come on dad wake up.” Marc pleaded.

Steve rolled over and opened his eyes. “Marc? How did you get here?”

“Dan told me where to come and find you.” Marc’s voice shivered as he spoke.

“Marc you should have stayed home.” Steve tried to sit up. “I still feel a little dizzy.” Steve admitted.

“Why?” Marc wondered.

“Franklin drugged me. Are you alone?” Steve asked. “I mean is your father here too?” Steve hoped.

Marc shook his head, “but I’m sure he’s on his way. Dan knows where I went. I told him to tell dad about Dine being at your house.”

“How did you know it was Dine?” Steve questioned

“James figured it out….” Marc reminded Steve of how Joey had been able to figure out Alexi wasn’t him. “And then just for good measure I peeked in on him while he was changing his shirt. Dan had already told me they tattooed you.”

“Yea, I guess there’s even a stronger connection between James and I. Is James all right?”

“Well.” Marc began. “He’s right outside.”

“You mean he’s here?” Steve cried.

“He followed me. By the time I knew he was with me it was to later to take him back to the house.”

“He’s out there with Franklin?” Steve shouted.

“I’m sorry dad. I was going to turn the freezer off when Franklin caught me.” Marc sobbed.

“Hey don’t cry. I know you were only trying to help. Do me a favor, keep your ear tuned out there does Franklin have James?”

Marc cued in on outside the thick door of the freezer. He could hear James crying and Franklin moving around.

“I don’t think Franklin has found him yet.” Marc assured. “We had a pretty good hiding place, and I told James to stay put.”

“Well then, we just might be in luck….”

“Maybe not just a minute…”

“Well, well. What do we have here?” Franklin said as he leaned over to James.

“I want my daddy.” James cried.

“Your daddy” Franklin thought for a moment. “Is Austin your father?”

James shook his head.

Again Franklin thought. Then he pointed to the freezer. “Is you daddy in there?”

This time James nodded.

Franklin picked up the boy and walked over to the freezer and opened the door. “Well, well Austin. It appears I have something that belongs to you. I think maybe we can do business after all.”

“You put him down now!” Steve shouted.

“In due time Austin. In due time both of you come on out.” Franklin moved away carrying James….

Steve and Marc stepped out of the freezer they were still very cold, to cold to catch up with Franklin and do much to him.

Franklin led them to a small room that looked like it had been an office at one time. As Steve and Marc approached the door Franklin pulled a gun and pointed it at James. “That’s far enough Austin” he threatened. “Just stay right there. Together we shall come to some kind of an understanding.”

“Let the kids go Franklin.” Steve asked. “They are not part of this.”

“Not on your life. They are part of it now.” Franklin hissed.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Oscar, Russ and Dan were well on their way. Rather than have Dan give them directions Oscar decided to take him with them.

“Can’t this car go any faster?” Oscar barked.

“I can only go as fast as the law will allow.” Russ shot back.

“We have to hurry. No telling what Franklin has done.” Oscar muttered.

As they prepared to cross over into Georgetown they were stopped when the arms of the railroad crossing came down and a train began to wiz by.

“We’re almost there to.” Dan griped.

“Can you see the end of the train Russ?” Oscar was growing impatient.

“Can’t see it Oscar” Russ told him.

“That’s just great!!” Oscar shouted.

“Dad, just take it easy.” Dan warned. “We’re very close. The garage is just on the other side of the tracks.”

“So close.” Oscar sighed. “We’re this close and there’s nothing we can do till this dam train gets out of the way.

“It will be soon now Oscar. I think I see the end of it.” Russ cried out.

“Well that’s some good news.” Oscar sat back and they waited for the train to pass in front of them

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“Franklin I’m begging you” Steve continued. “He’s only three. He never did anything to hurt you.” Steve persisted.

“I know that.” Franklin spat. “But you did. My plan was to kill you, but I believe I have a fate for you that would be worse than death, that is for something to happen to your son.”

Steve was becoming furious. He now had full use of his bionics but dared not make a move, not with that gun pointed at his baby’s head. Jaime would kill him if Franklin didn’t beat her to it.

“Now you’re going to do as I say…” Franklin smirked.

The door burst open and Russ and Oscar stormed inside.

“Oscar, stop!!!” Steve shouted.

Oscar and Russ stopped in there tracks.

“Approach gentlemen” Franklin urged. “But might I suggest you do so with caution.”

As Oscar and Russ drew closer they could see the horrific sight. Steve and Marc who were standing in the doorway and Franklin not five feet in front of them, holding a gun to James’ head.

“Just stay back Oscar.” Franklin ordered. “Col Austin and I were about to do some business, right?”

“Not when you’re holding my son hostage.” Steve muttered.

James who had been watching the exchange between this strange man and his father now decided it was time to take matters into his own hands. He reached out with his hand and grabbed the barrel of the gun and bent it downward.

Franklin was so shocked he let go of the gun and stared blankly at the boy in front of him.

Holding the gun in his hand by the barrel James looked at Franklin “You hurt my daddy!” He cried and banged the gun on the desk splitting it in two.

“James. Bring it to daddy.” Steve coaxed.

“No!” Franklin cried as he regained his composure realizing what he was up against. Again he reached for James. James promptly knocked him on the head sending Franklin stumbling to the floor.

“James. Come on.” Steve bent down to the boy’s level. “Bring that to daddy.”

James made his way across the office toward his father. “Here daddy” he handed him the gun.

Steve took it from him and in turn gave it to Russ. Then he lifted the boy up and carried him out to the car leaving the rest of the apprehension of Franklin up to Oscar and Russ.

“Are you guys ok?” Dan asked.

“Yea, thanks to ole James here.” Steve ruffled the boy’s hair.

When Oscar and Russ got back to the car Russ used Oscar’s car phone to call for back up. “I’ll stay here with Franklin.” Russ stated

“That’s fine Russ.” Steve agreed. “What about Dine?”

“He should be back in jail He was supposed to have surgery for years now but his lawyer said any surgery Dine didn’t want to have was against his rights. Every time we approached the date. His attorney kept saying Dine shouldn’t have any operation he didn’t want to.”

“I hope we can change that.” Steve was angry.

“I have the court order ready to go. Since he broke out of jail, all appeals on that are off. He’s to have surgery first thing in the morning.”

“Good.” Steve agreed

They were driving back to Steve’s when James turned to Steve. “Daddy who was that man that looked like you?”

“Just a bad man named John Dine. He tried to trick your daddy a long time ago; I guess he’s still trying to trick me.”

“Oh, ok.” James leaned his head against Steve’s shoulder and was asleep before they got home.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“I wish you would have called me.” Jaime fumed after Steve told her what had happened on their way back from the airport.

“To tell you the truth I hesitated to even tell you.” Steve admitted “besides, there wasn’t time.”

“Well I’m glad you did. How is James?” Jaime wondered

“He’s fine. Oscar is watching him and Marc. I wanted to be alone when I told you.”

“Well I’m glad you were. You’re sure Franklin and Dine are both back in prison.”

Steve nodded. “Dine had the operation yesterday he no longer looks like me.”

“Well that’s good.” Jaime nodded.

“Yea I know. Well here we are.” Steve pulled into Oscar’s drive. “We’ll get the kids and head home. By the way I never did ask. How was the trip?”

“It was great, we had a good time.” Jaime took Jennifer out of her car seat and they headed into Oscar’s house.

“Hi Jaime” Oscar greeted. “Did you have a good time?”

“Yes I did, but not as interesting as the time you all had.” She added.

“So Steve decided to tell you huh?” Oscar smiled at Steve. “Good idea.”

“I thought so. I’m sure James would have told her.” Steve smiled.

“I know he would have. The kids are in the living room Marc and James are ready to go.”

“Good. I want to get back home.” Jaime set Jennifer down and the baby began to scoot around the floor.

“Why don’t you wait here? I’ll go get the kids.” Steve suggested.

“I’m going to let you.” Jaime sat down at the kitchen table across from Oscar.

“So tell me all about your trip…”

In the living room Marc and Matt sat on the couch talking while James stood staring at the two.

“Hey James” Steve picked him up. “You look like a man with something on your mind.”

“Huh?” James responded.

Steve laughed. “That means it looks like you’re thinking about something real hard.”

James nodded. He pointed to Matt. “He looks like Marc.”

“Yea I know he does.” Steve smiled.

“Is he bad?” James wondered.

“No he’s not. He and Matt are twins.” Steve explained.

“What are twins?” James asked.

“Well.” Steve began they are brothers, or sisters who were born on the same day from the same mommy and daddy.”

“But Marc is my brother.” James pointed out.

“I know son. Look when you’re a little older I’ll explain it to you. Marc, Matt, Dan and Joey are brothers. Marc just wants to live with us. That’s why he calls ‘uncle’ Oscar dad and I’m dad. Understand?”

James shook his head. “No.” He replied.

“Well you will one of these days. Come on let’s go home. Are you coming Marc?”

“Yea dad, I’ll see you later Matt.”

“See you later.” Marc headed out the door with Jaime and Steve while Matt went upstairs to do his homework.

“How is Matt doing in school?” Jaime asked when they were on there way.”

“Ok I guess.” Marc told her.

“Well that’s good. You know Steve, I think James is old enough, I’m going to start including him in the lessons as well.”

“Do you have to? I sort of look forward to spending the days with him” Steve complained.

“Well the sooner the better.” Jaime smiled.

“I guess you’re right. You said Rudy wanted to see you when you got back to check on the baby?”

Jaime nodded. “Why don’t we go there right now?”

“Glad you’re back.” Rudy greeted. “How was the trip?”

“It was just fine.” Jaime replied. “So when do you think the baby will be due.”

“I would say somewhere around the latter part of November.” Rudy replied as he applied the ‘tattoo’ to Jaime’s upper right arm.”

“Maybe in time for Thanksgiving” Jaime speculated.

“That could be.” Rudy agreed as he finished up.

“That would be nice.” Jaime smiled. “Now you’re sure this will work?” She put her top back on.

Rudy nodded. “It worked for Steve. It told Marc, Dine wasn’t Steve.”

“I suppose you’re right.” She turned to Steve “Well I guess I’m ready to get home.”

“I’m ready any time. Is everything all set Rudy?” Steve wondered.

“It sure is. I’ll see you in about a month. Well I suppose I should say I want to check on the baby again in about a month. I’m sure I’ll see you before then.”

“Will you use Danny’s records as a guide this time?” Steve wanted to know.

“I already have them. I’ll see you two later.” Rudy gave them a wave as they left.

“Let’s go home” Jaime stated when they got in the car.

“I’m all for that.” Steve nodded. “Why don’t we pick up a pizza before we go home, that way we won’t have to cook?”

“Oh am I glad you suggested that.” Jaime smiled at him.

“Ok then let’s go.” Steve smiled as he glanced at his family then he pulled into traffic.
