Sonja smiled as she gazed upon her sleeping husband. Arriving at the Royal Hotel in Sacramento, the two had only briefly left the room in the seven days they had been there.
Leaning over, she softly kissed his lips. She felt his arms move and pulled her on top of his hard body. Running his hands over her back and buttocks, he moaned in pleasure as her tongue sought his. Sitting up, she felt the object of her desire and her breathing increased with the wildness of their movements. Holding on tightly to each other, they savored the closeness and love between them. Holding her on his lap, Heath’s lips teased her with kisses from her neck to her breasts. Pulling his head up, she kissed him deeply as their passion exploded within.
Rolling them onto their sides, Heath tenderly kissed her smiling lips. “Morning, darling.”
“Morning.” she sighed in delight as his hands continued caressing her skin.
“Mrs. Barkley, what would you like to do today?”
“Hmmm.” said Sonja leaning over and nibbling on his ear. “Well, we should see Frederick Remington’s exhibit. His artwork is incredible.”
Heath groaned as she ran her hand down his stomach while using her tongue on his ear. Rolling onto her, he delighted in the moans that left her lips as his tongue tormented her. Unable to contain it, the aroused couple joined again and met as one in each other’s arms.
Staring into her brown eyes, Heath chuckled, “If we keep this up, we’re not gonna make it out of this room today, either.”
Sonja smiled wickedly, “We can go to a museum anytime.”
Pulling her into his arms, he smirked, “Then you can explain to Sue why we didn’t go to see the exhibit. You told her we would.”
Sitting up and moving to the side of the bed, Sonja sighed, “If you’d rather go to a stuffy museum, we will.”
Jumping up, Heath pulled her back onto the bed and pinned her arms over her head with one hand. Staring deeply into her darkening eyes, he said quietly as he ran his fingers over her skin. “I love you, Mrs. Barkley.”
Pulling her hands out of his, she pulled his lips to hers, “I love you, too.”

The candlelight dinner was over and the kitchen cleaned when the couple headed into the study. Opening the door, Nick pulled her to him and picked her up in his arms. Pushing the fallen crutches into the room, he closed the door with his foot and kissed her deeply. Her hands pulled his lips harder into hers, their tongues meeting.
“I’ve missed you this week.” whispered Nick his hazel eyes burning with desire.
Taking a deep breath to quell the fervent desire, Sue whispered, “Me too.”
Laying down beside her on the sofa, they explored their desires for each other with kisses and touches. Relishing in the closeness and feel of each other in each other’s arms.
“Nick, I’m gonna tell you something and I want you to let me finish before you say anything.” said Sue quietly.
Leaning on his arm, Nick nodded, “Okay, honey.”
Clearing her throat, she looked into his eyes, “Mr. Foster got a letter from Jamie today and he was real torn up about it. She was begging and pleading to come back to be with him. She’s his only child and I can understand him wanting to have her close. He asked me what I thought and I said I didn’t have a problem with her coming back.”
As she was speaking, she watched the hazel eyes widen with surprise and then blaze with fury at the end. Nick walked to the window and stared outside while his hands clenched and unclenched at his side.
Sitting up, Sue watched the tenseness in his body and his measures to control the anger that burned her from across the room. Turning, Nick spoke through clenched teeth, “I can’t believe you said it was okay.”
“Nick...” said Sue softly.
“YOU AND HEATH ALMOST DIED BECAUSE OF HER!” shouted Nick.
Sue stated quietly, “Jamie may have been the catalyst, but I was the one who decided to go through the mountains. It was my lack of thought that almost killed me and Heath, not Jamie.”
“IT WAS HER PLAN TO GET RID OF YOU AND IT ALMOST WORKED! I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW YOU CAN WELCOME HER BACK!”
Pulling her crutches to her, Sue hobbled over and stood in front of the furious man and spoke firmly, “I’m not welcoming her back. She’s the only child he has and I don’t want to be the one that keeps her from him. Nick, can’t you understand that?”
Her tone was firm but the emerald eyes were pleading as they looked into the hazel eyes. Shaking his head, Nick terse whisper twisted her heart, “How can you say she should come back here after what she did!”
Walking past her, he strode out of the house and she heard the horse galloping away. Sighing deeply, she poured a drink and sat at the desk. Sipping it, she stroked Nicodena’s fur and spoke to the purring cat. “That went well, don’t ya’ think?”
Nicodena meowed and rubbed her head against her mistress. Sue nodded her head, “I know. He’ll be back when he simmers down.”

Heath helped Sonja down from the train and put his arm around her waist as they were met by the family.
“Welcome back!” was heard while hugs and kisses were exchanged.
Taking the bags, Nick and Heath put them in the back of the surrey. Seeing they were alone, Nick said quietly, “Heath, I need to talk to you.”
“Sure, Nick.” replied Heath puzzled at Nick’s tone of voice.
“Do you think Sonja will mind if we go for a ride?” asked Nick.
“Only one way to find out. Wait here.” said Heath walking over to his bride. Whispering in her ear, she nodded and gave him a kiss. Glancing at Nick, she frowned at the look on his face.
“Victoria, what’s going on with Nick?”
Shrugging, Victoria replied, “I’m not sure. I think he and Sue had a fight, but he won’t talk about it.”
“Those two are so stubborn, it’s a wonder they’ve survived knowing each other.” smirked Sonja.
Laughing, Victoria and Audra walked beside her to the surrey. Climbing in, Audra asked, “Did you find out anything about the wedding?”
“No, I couldn’t get him to tell me.” sighed Sonja. “I tried everything I could think of, but he wouldn’t part with the secret.”
Disappointed, Audra exclaimed, “If they don’t get married, we’ll never know what Nick was planning!”
“Audra, let’s not jump to conclusions. I’m sure they’re still getting married.” replied Victoria calmly.
Heath glanced sideways at his quiet brother as he rode. Nick lost in his thoughts headed to the lake and dismounted under a tree. Following suit, Heath stood by his side and waited for Nick to speak.
“Jamie Foster’s back in town.” said Nick.
Heath’s surprise reflected on his face, “When did she get back?”
“Couple days ago. She sent her father a letter begging to come back. Do you know what happened when he got the letter?” asked Nick.
“No.”
“Mr. Foster told Sue about Jamie wanting to come back. Sue said she didn’t have a problem with it! Can you believe she said that after what you two went through because of her?” inquired Nick incredulously.
Shrugging, Heath replied, “Nick, she was bound to come back one day or another. Jamie’s the only child he has. Did you and Sue fight about this?”
“She talked, I yelled and then left.” admitted Nick.
Taking a deep breath, Heath asked, “When was that?”
Shifting his feet, Nick looked at the grass, “Bout a week ago.”
“Uh huh. So, you left and haven’t spoken to Sue in a week?”
“I was so angry at her, I was afraid I’d say something I’d regret.” stated Nick.
Looking into Heath’s eyes, he said quietly, “I don’t understand how she can say it’s okay, Heath. I’ve thought about it and I don’t get it.”
Nodding, Heath flashed his brother a lop-sided grin, “I expect it has something to do with her heart, Nick. Knowing how close Sue was to her own father, she’d feel guilty if anything happened to Mr. Foster and Jamie didn’t see him. She loves ya’ Nick and she knows you love her. Jamie being back in Stockton is not gonna change that.”
“She’s not gonna be happy with me, Heath.” smirked Nick.
Clapping Nick on the back, Heath grinned, “Remember, her heart’s as big as Texas. Besides, who can really understand women?”
Hugging his brother tightly, Nick whispered, “I missed you, little brother. Did you have a good time on your honeymoon?”
“If you have to ask, we’re gonna have to have a talk before you go on yours.” teased Heath ducking the hand that was swung at him.
“Come on, I gotta go eat crow.” groaned Nick walking away with Heath’s chuckle ringing in his ears.
bvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbv
Standing outside the corral, the men and Sue cheered Pedro on as he rode the bucking horse. Flying off onto the ground, Pedro lay stunned as laughter sounded and snide remarks caught his ears. “Stop resting! Get back on that little pony!” “Slacker!” “Quit playing around.”
Rising slowly, he bowed to his audience and dusted off his clothes. Bill held the bridle and let go when Pedro signaled. The spectators watched the dancing between the horse and man. The dust rising and clouding the air as the spectacle continued until the horse’s last effort was expended.
Pedro rode the bay around the corral and Sue collected her winnings from the twins. “Thanks, boys!”
Hank and Horace groaned, “You’re welcome, boss”
“Jose, you got the buggy ready?” called Sue.
“Yes, Miss Sue.” yelled Jose.
Looking at the men, Sue smiled, “See you boys later for some poker!”
Groans could be heard throughout the crew as she hobbled to the buggy and climbed in beside the teenager. Laughing, Jose shook the reins and they drove out to the spot they used for target practice. Reaching the little knoll, Jose tied the reins to a fencepost and they belted on their guns.
“Miss Sue, what track is that?” asked Jose pointing to the ground.
Looking at the track, Sue replied, “Mountain Lion. It’s not a fresh track because it’s not as defined around the edges. See the direction it’s taking?”
“Si.”
“Heading back to the mountains.” informed Sue.
Jose followed her and listened intently as she pointed out different things to him. He enjoyed the time he spent alone with his boss. She’d teach him things, talk about the future and listen to his thoughts, his dreams. He felt in his heart that she was the sister he did not have. Trusting in her, he would tell her things he’d never tell another soul.
“Ready for some practice?” asked Sue watching the dark eyes light up eagerly.
“Si, Miss Sue.”
Practicing for a half hour, Jose smiled and asked, “Can I see the draw again, boss?”
“Can’t do it with this cast on, but how about you throw up a can?” asked Sue, smiling at the excitement on Jose’s face. “Fast is not as important as accuracy.”
“I understand.” replied Jose. Holding onto his shoulder, Sue dropped her crutches, put all her weight on her left leg and used her casted leg to balance while taking her pistol out of its holster.
Jose picked up a can and threw it into the air. The six shots almost sounded as one as she fanned her gun and the can flew different directions in the air each time it was hit.
Sitting on his horse, Nick’s jaw dropped open as he watched the performance being played out before him. Picking up another, Jose cheered as she repeated the performance again. Jack and Heath grinned at the shock on Nick’s face.
“Nick, you’re catching flies.” said Heath watching the red climb up Nick’s neck.
“Did you see that?”
“I’ve seen her do that lots of times, Nick. I told you before, Sue’s real handy with a gun.” explained Heath. “Her reflexes are really fast.”
Smirking, Jack said quietly, “Don’t worry, Nick. She won’t shoot ya’. Well, at least, I don’t think she will.”
“I’m not worried!” growled Nick kicking Coco and heading towards the two practicing. Shaking their heads, Heath and Jack followed prepared to put out the fireworks that was sure to follow.
Looking up at Jose’s statement, Sue watched the three riders approaching and felt her hackles rising, “Jose, can you bring the buggy over?”
“Si, boss.” said Jose hurrying to handle her request unnerved slightly by the darkness of her face.
Leaning on her crutches, Sue waited as the men dismounted.
“Sue, I need to talk to you.” stated Nick receiving the full blast of her fury from the raging emerald eyes.
Ignoring the dark haired man, Sue said quietly, “Heath, nice to see you’re back home. Jose and I were just catching up on his shooting practice.”
“Nice to be home. Sonja and I enjoyed the exhibit of Frederick’s. He gave us something to give to you.” Walking over, Heath kissed her cheek and whispered, “Don’t throw it all away over a fight.”
“Thanks, Heath.” replied Sue with a slight smile. “We have some work to do before dinnertime.”
Hobbling to the buggy, Jose waited as she removed her gunbelt and placed it under the seat. Nick was routed to the spot where he stood, his heart palpitating at the sense of loss he was feeling, his head reeling from the thought she may not forgive him the words spoken from anger and concern.
Jack walked over to the woman and softly spoke to her. “Sue, talk to Nick.”
“No, Jack. Not now!” snapped Sue angrily. Handing her crutches to Jose, Jack pulled her back from the buggy and yelled, “Drive Jose! That’s an order!”
Unsure what to do, Jose sat staring at his two bosses. Sue’s face was red with fury and she was screaming at Jack, “WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?”
Letting her fall to a sitting position on the ground, Jack scared the horses into moving by hitting them with his hat. “Take them back to the ranch, Jose!” shouted Jack as the teenager brought the horses under control and headed back to the barn.
Clenching her hands in anger, Sue yelled, “YOU’RE FIRED!”
Walking over to the brothers, Jack winked at Nick and shouted back. “You can’t fire a partner. Nick will bring you back to the ranch.”
“DAMMIT, JACK! YOU BETTER GIT BACK HERE!”
Mounting, Heath and Jack galloped back to the ranchhouse leaving the two alone on the range.
bvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbv
Walking over, Nick sat on the ground by the furious woman. He was only a foot away from her physically, but emotionally they were miles apart. Sitting beside her, Nick gathered his thoughts. Picking up a blade of grass, he twisted it in his fingers and spoke quietly.
“I never claimed to be the smartest man around. Sometimes it takes a while for things to sink in. I should’ve come to see you, but I was so angry. I thought I’d say something wrong and drive you away from me. In not coming to see you, I realize I may have done that already.”
Pausing, he glanced at her profile and sighed, “I’m not saying I understand why you said she could come back. Because I love you, I don’t need to understand. I just need to be there to support you.”
Brushing a strand of hair back behind her ear, Nick admitted, “The fear of what happened before is what made me so angry. That’s all I keep seeing in my mind. You and Heath fighting the pneumonia in those ice baths. I’m afraid something’s gonna happen and I’ll lose you.”
Watching the sun sinking in the sky, she listened to him reveal his thoughts and fears. The anger slowly subsiding as she pondered her own feelings and realized she was afraid, too.
Looking at the horizon, she asked softly, “Do you feel like you’re somehow waiting for the other shoe to drop?”
“Yeah, it does feel like that.”
“Me, too.” whispered Sue looking into the soft hazel eyes. “Sometimes, I think it’s too good to be true and someone’s gonna steal it away from me. Nick, I don’t wanna stand in the way of any child being with their parent. I won’t be running away this time if she does something.”
Cupping her cheek in his hand, Nick whispered, “You’re the only woman I want to be my wife and grow old with.”
“You’re the only man I want, Nick. How come we’re so stubborn and argue so much?” asked Sue. “Do you think that’ll change after we’re married?”
Thinking, Nick smiled, “I don’t think so. I think we fight cause we have so much fun making up.”
Shaking her head in disagreement, Sue replied seriously, “Nah, it’s not that much fun.”
Looking at her in shock, Nick’s eyes lit up from the unspoken challenge, “Really? So, this isn’t any fun?”
Leaning over, he nibbled on her earlobe and placed kisses down her neck. Working his way back up her neck, he claimed her lips, his tongue teased her into opening her mouth. Deepening the kiss, his fingers ran his fingers gently over the front of her breasts. Her body quivered from the excitement his touch was creating, her muscles losing their strength. Sensing her weakness from the desires purging through her, Nick pulled them both down onto the grass.
Holding her hands over her head, he kissed her into a state of oblivion and wild frenzied desire. Moans and gasps escaped her lips when his fingers reached under the material of her shirt and lovingly caressed her. Running his hand on the silky skin of her leg, she groaned with need when he continued his exploration under her riding skirt. Releasing her hands, she entwined them in the back of his shirt as his touch carried her away into a land of forbidden wanton desires.
Pulling his face to hers, she hungrily kissed him and ran her hands over his hardened body. Moaning at each other’s touches and movements until they fell back exhausted from the wild outpour of passion.
Sweating and gasping for air, the sunset caressed them as it slowly left the horizon. Leaning over, Nick tenderly kissed her lips and whispered, “Did you have fun, honey?”
Pulling his lips back to hers, she responded with a lingering kiss. Looking into the hazel eyes, she whispered huskily, “I don’t care if I have to crawl, limp, run or hobble down the aisle, Nick. We better get married soon, cause I don’t know if I can control myself much longer.”
Picking her up in his arms and sitting her sideways on top of Coco, Nick climbed up behind, held her tightly and whispered, “Soon, honey. Soon.”
Nudging Coco to a walk, she pulled his head down and kissed him deeply. Nick started Coco in the direction of the ranch and returned the kisses willingly.

“Okay, Sue.” said Howard quietly as Nick nodded his encouragement to her.
Releasing a shaky breath, Sue whispered, “Here goes.”
Swinging her legs to the side of the table, she slowly pushed herself off the table and stood up. Taking some tentative steps, Howard watched her move around the room with a critical eye. Nick wiped his eyes and beamed proudly at his chameleon’s first steps out of the plaster.
“Feels weird, doc.” stated Sue. “I can feel a slight limp.”
Nick looked at Dr. Merar in surprise, when he said, “Better than being dead, ain’t it.”
Laughing, Sue nodded, “Definitely!”
Gesturing for her to lay back on the table, Howard gently ran his hands over the thigh. “The bone doesn’t seem to have healed crooked. I recommend walking as much as you can. However, don’t over do it. This leg will be weaker than your other and it will tire quicker.”
“I’ll be careful, Dr. Merar.” agreed Sue hugging the man. “Thanks for everything.”
Startled, Howard smiled and patted her back, “Nothing personal, but I don’t want to see either of you for a long time.”
Laughing, Sue nodded, “Deal!”
Walking over to her, Nick wrapped his arms around her and held her close. “I’ll take good care of her, Dr. Merar.”
“I know you will, Nick.” smiled Howard leaving the two alone in the room.
Tilting her chin up, Nick brushed his lips against hers and whispered, “Make sure you do what the doc says, honey.”
“I will.” whispered Sue. “I’m gonna put my jeans on!”
Laughing, Nick waited for her to change and come back into the room. “I kind of liked you wearing skirts and dresses.”
“I told ya’ it was only temporary, Nick.” smiled Sue.
Leaning over, Nick whispered in her ear, “It was much easier to feel your soft skin with dresses on, honey.”
Sue turned red and winked, “Too bad, Barkley. I need to get some supplies from the store before I head back to the ranch.”
“I’ll walk you up there.” said Nick offering her his arm with a wide smile.
Stopping at the entrance to the store, Nick tenderly kissed her goodbye. Sue ordered her supplies and walked to the buggy and drove it to the front of the store. Mr. Perkins carried the order out and placed it in the buggy.
Seeing the sheriff across the street, Sue went over and greeted him, “Hi Fred!”
“Sue, nice to see you with the cast off.” smiled Fred.
“Feels great.” replied Sue. “You haven’t been out for supper lately, how about tonight?”
“Sounds good. What time?”
“Six, okay?” asked Sue.
“Perfect.” said Fred. “I can’t wait to have some of Maria’s cooking.”
Sue and Fred turned at the loud voice coming from down the street, “For Pete’s sake, get out of the way, Jamie!”
Fred grabbed Sue’s arm as she walked past him, “Don’t do anything you’ll regret, Sue.”
“Fred, would I do something like that?” asked Sue innocently. “Come with me if you’re worried.”
Sighing, Fred followed Sue down the boardwalk. Jamie stepped closer to the man who was backed up against the wall trying to stay out of the reach of her hands and smiled, “Nick, I just wanted to say hi.”
Sue walked up and pulled the girl to the side. Reaching up, she pulled his mouth to her and kissed him deeply. Nick wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer to him. Breaking the kiss, Sue winked.
Looking at the girl glaring at them, Sue stated firmly, “This is my man. Stay away from him or I’ll drive you out of town myself.”
Walking past her, Sue pushed her backwards with her hand. Jamie caught off guard by the shove fell backwards into the street and landed in a puddle of water, mud and horse droppings while a stunned Fred and Nick watched. Shrieking and gasping, Jamie stood up and heard the laughter from the people on the street. Running down the street, she disappeared into the post office.
Nick held Sue by the waist, prepared to lift her into the buggy. Looking into the mischievous emerald eyes, he smiled, “Well, if I need help again fighting off a woman, I know who I’ll call on.
“Anything for you, Mr. Barkley.” snickered Sue.
Kissing her tenderly, Nick grinned and helped her into the buggy. “I’ll see you on Saturday, honey.”
bvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbv
Thursday morning, Sue rode with Davey and Jose. The sun had not risen yet from it’s night of sleep when the three left the ranch. Feeling the warmth already in the air, they knew the day held a promise of hot California temperatures. The trip to Modesto was a spur of the moment event suggested by Jack. Jose was honored and excited to be riding with his boss and the wrangler to Modesto to pick up two horses. It was his first trip on behalf of the ranch and away from the town of Stockton.
Sue felt the excitement radiating from Jose as he rode beside her. Grinning, she recalled the look in his eyes when she asked him to ride with her. His mother realized the importance of the trip to her son and felt reassured that he would be in the company of Miss Sue and Davey Hinton. Even so, Maria had hugged him tightly before he mounted. Jose and his mother had never been apart before, not even for one night.
“Miss Sue, do you think mama’s gonna be okay?” asked Jose.
Nodding her head, Sue stated, “She’ll be fine Jose. Mrs. Franklin will be there to help your mama feel less lonely without you there. Mr. Jack was going to bring Miss. James out to stay at the house, too. She’ll have lots of company.”
Satisfied with the boss’ statement, Jose watched the sky changing colors from the sun rising to greet the day and warm the backs of the travelers on their way.
Riding behind the two, Davey smiled when he remembered laughing with the rest of the crew as Horace had relayed to them what happened between the boss and Jamie Foster. The entire bunkhouse was proud of the way their boss had dealt with her. The town citizens were still chuckling over the dip in the puddle Jamie had taken.
When Nick Barkley had started courting the boss, the men had watched carefully as any big brother would watch over a little sister. As time went on, they had all agreed that Nick appeared to be the man that would capture her untamed heart.
Though, at times, even they had wondered if the two stubborn and quick tempered individuals would find their way to becoming a union of one.
The whole crew had eagerly volunteered to help in anyway they could with the wedding plans. Nick and Heath had gladly accepted their assistance. None of the men had fully realized how daunting a task planning a wedding could be. Just the creating of the guest list alone had raised the hair on the backs of their necks. All the bachelors involved concluded that should they ever marry, they would have nothing to do with planning it and would only show up the morning of their own wedding.
Knocking softly on the door, Nick heard footsteps approach the door and quietly asked as it opened and closed. “You ready?”
“Yep.” said Heath softly following Nick down the stairs to the kitchen for a quick breakfast.
Sitting at the small table, Heath poured another cup of coffee, “Did Jarrod agree to handling the inviting?”
“Yeah.” stated Nick. Grinning widely, he looked at his little brother. “I can’t wait for Saturday.”
Flashing a lop-side grin, Heath replied, “It’ll be here before you know it, Nick.”
Finishing their breakfasts and coffee, the brothers rode over to the neighboring ranch. Reaching the beginning of the Weston ranch, Nick looked over and asked, “Heath, do you think Sue will be upset the wedding is not as large as Sonja’s or Charity’s?”
“If she was concerned about those things, she’d have planned the wedding herself.” stated Heath. “The only people she’d want there are the ones you’re inviting. The ones she cares about, not the society mongrels as she calls them.”
Chuckling, Nick smiled, “Yeah, you’re right. I just want everything to be perfect.”
“Don’t start getting nervous already, you’ve still got two more days to go.” smirked Heath urging Charger into a gallop drowning out his brother grumbling response.
Crossing the river, Sue stopped Rio and dismounted under a tree. Jose and Davey followed her and climbed down. Loosening the cinches to allow the horses to breathe easier, they sat down and enjoyed a packed lunch in the shade. Davey and Sue discussed the horses they would be bringing back. Looking at Jose, Sue wondered at the thoughtful look on his face.
“Jose, what ya’ thinking about?” inquired Sue when Davey went to take the horses for a drink.
Glancing over, Jose said quietly, “I was just wondering something, boss.”
“Wondering what?”
“When you get married to Mr. Nick, where will you live?” asked Jose seriously. “He has a ranch and you have a ranch. You can’t stay at both.”
“Good question, Jose.” replied Sue with a frown, “You know, I haven’t even thought about that.”
“Miss Sue, you don’t know!” exclaimed Jose.
Putting a smile on her face, Sue leaned over and ruffled his hair, “Nothing to get excited about, these things work themselves out. Why don’t you see if old Davey needs some help.”
“Okay, Miss Sue.” smiled Jose walking over to help Davey.
Sitting on the log, Sue thought on the teenager’s words and wondered to herself. ‘Damn, where will we live?’
Dismounting in front of the Modesto hotel, the three travelers obtained two rooms for their stay. Heading to the livery, they stripped their horses and groomed them before finding the hostler. Jose watched while his two companions checked over the horses and spoke with the old man. Satisfied, the boss paid the man and they headed to the nearest restaurant for dinner. Returning to the hotel, the three laughed and played cards until they retired for the night, eager to be back on the trail at first light.
Behind the locked door of her room, Sue laid in bed and couldn’t stop the mental conversation that was running through her mind.
‘Where does Nick think we’ll live? The Barkley ranch, of course. His ranch is larger than mine, but that shouldn’t be the determining factor on where we’ll live.’
‘At the Barkley ranch, I’d have two sisters, three brothers, a dear friend in Silas, a mother and no privacy.’
‘At my ranch, I’d have a partner, one sister, a dear friend in Maria, five brothers, a nephew in Jose and no privacy.’
Comparing the two lists in her mind, Sue’s heart exploded with warmth when she realized the answer was in the lists she was comparing, ‘No privacy at either place, but at one I’d have a mother! I’d have a mother!’
Snuggling deeper into the blankets, she smiled and sighed. ‘A mother.’
bvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbvbv
Rising early, they ate breakfast and were on the trail back to Stockton before most of the good citizens of Modesto had even thought about waking. Davey and Sue each had a rope wrapped around their saddlehorn with a new horse attached to the end of it.
When the sheriff had described the horses to Jack upon his return from Modesto, Jack initially was going to send Davey and Pedro to look over the animals. However, realizing that Nick needed his fiancee out of the way for a couple days, Jack had spoken with Sue about going with Davey and taking Jose with them.
Knowing that Jose had never been out of Stockton, Sue thought it was a good idea.
Riding along at a steady pace, the three were keeping an eye on the darkening clouds that were dotting the horizon in the direction they were heading. They watched the lightning streaking across the sky creating a spectacular light show. The horses became increasingly agitated and frightened at each clap of thunder.
Looking around, Sue turned off the trail and the others followed. Reaching a grove of trees, she shouted to Davey and Jose over the wind that was now howling, “I’m not crossing that range with all that lightning. This isn’t the best place, but we’re gonna have to stay here until it settles down some, boys.”
Davey and Jose nodded their understanding. Climbing down, Davey ran a picket line for the horses. Putting on their slickers when the first large drops of rain fell, they explored the area searching for a better place to wait out the storm. Finding none, they resigned to hunching up their shoulders and tucking their chins in to keep the wind driven rain out while trying to keep the horses calm.
The two new horses were unbroken and wide eyed at the sounds around them. One pulled back sharply in panic when the boom of thunder shook the ground, its line broke and dangled freely. Grabbing a hold of the rope on the panicked horse, Sue struggled to keep it from bolting.
A burst of speed from the frightened animal caught her unawares and she was propelled forward onto the ground. Davey and Jose watched helplessly, their hands full with the other four horses. The air whooshed out of her lungs and she was pulled through the muddy ground behind the fleeing animal. Opening her hands, she let the rope go and lay stunned on the ground gasping for air.
“Boss! You okay?” shouted Davey relieved when he saw her slowly climb to her feet and wave at him.
Walking over, Sue was greeted by laughter. “What’s so funny?”
“Miss Sue, you should see yourself!” replied Jose trying to keep the smile off his face.
Looking down and seeing the torn slicker, Sue groaned at the amount of mud on her clothes from her unexpected ride. Reaching a hand up, she wiped her face and sighed as it came away with mud on it.
“I hear in some of the big cities they pay a lot of money for mud baths. You got one for free, boss!” snickered Davey while Jose laughed loudly.
“Very funny, you two!” smiled Sue. “That horse is probably all the way to Wyoming by now.”
Over night, the severity of the storm lessened a small amount at a time. The three travelers wiped the rain off their saddles and climbed on. Heading down the trail towards Stockton, thankful for the calm blue skies they witnessed on the horizon.
Jack and Maria paced alternately on the porch watching the horizon for the three members of their ranch that were hours overdue. Seeing the riders topping the small rise overlooking the ranch, Maria went inside and brought out Victoria.
“Where have you been? You’re late!” called Jack when the three rode beside the barn.
As they neared the house, Jack caught a glimpse of Sue and he exclaimed, “What the hell happened to you?”
Maria dashed off the porch and hugged Jose to her when he dismounted. Jose speaking rapidly in spanish to his mother about the trip.
Climbing slowly off Rio, Sue said, “We lost one of the horses yesterday during a bad storm and we couldn’t find it again. I’ll tell ya’ about it after I take care of Rio.”
Grabbing her arm, Jack shook his head, “Davey can take care of Rio.”
“It’s been a long two days for all three of us. I’ll do it.” replied Sue with annoyance.
Victoria came down the steps, held the mud streaked cheek and said quietly, “Suzanne Weston, today’s your wedding day.”
“Suzanne Weston, today’s your wedding day.”
The words tumbled around in her stunned mind as she looked at Victoria in shock. Her heart was pumping ferociously in her chest and a slight tremor ran through her body. With hands shaking, she nodded with a dumbfounded look on her face and allowed Victoria to lead her into the house with Maria following.
“Jack, can’t say I’ve ever seen the boss so shocked before.” said Davey.
“I don’t think that’s the reaction Nick was hoping for.” snickered Jack. “You and Jose look beat. Get a couple hours sleep. I’ll take care of the horses.”
Maria hurried into the bathroom and ran the water for a bath, pouring a generous amount of lilac bath crystals in the water. Sue came out of her bedroom dressed in a robe, her hair, face and neck were streaked with mud.
Hugging the shaking woman, Victoria held her face and smiled. “Don’t tell me you’re nervous!”
“I can’t stop shaking. It’s my wedding day.” whispered Sue. “I can’t believe it’s actually happening.”
Kissing her forehead, Victoria grinned widely, “You and Nick deserve every happiness life will bring you. Come on, you don’t wanna be late for your own wedding.”
Holding on tightly to her, Sue asked, “After we’re married, can I call you Mother?”
“Nothing would please me more.” smiled Victoria watching the emerald eyes well with tears. “No crying now. Nick will have a fit if you show up with red and puffy eyes!”
Laughing, Sue smiled and headed to the bath Maria had started, to wash the remnants of her mud bath off.
An hour later, Sue stared at Victoria from her seat in front of the dressing table, and asked, “What do you mean I have to wear a blindfold?”
Bill stopped the buggy and lifted the blindfolded woman down from the carriage and led her inside the tent handing her over to Sonja and Charity. Victoria followed carrying the wedding dress and shoes, Sue had chosen in Texas so long ago.
Seeing the buggy arrive, the Bardo twins lit the candles and Jack entered another tent.
“Nick, your bride is here.” informed Jack.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Nick nodded, “Great! How’s everything look, Jack?”
Rolling his eyes, Jack groaned, “It looks fine, Nick. This must be the tenth time you’ve asked!”
Jack left to make sure everything was ready, again. Nick blushed while his brothers snickered at him.
Heath stood back and admired his handiwork, “Perfect!”
Eugene smiled at his brothers and agreed, “This day is perfect, Nick. I can’t believe you were able to pull it off.”
“I had a lot of help, Gene.” grinned Nick. “I can tell you this, I’m never planning a wedding again.”
Jarrod handed out the drinks he had poured and lifted his glass in a salute. “To our brother, who’s about to be joined in marriage with a woman who is as beautiful inside as she is outside.”
“I’m a lucky man.” agreed Nick with a grin.
Winking at Heath, Jarrod continued his salute. “A woman who can be thankful and reassured that her soon to be husband has the occupation of Wedding Planner to fall back on should they fall into hard times.”
“VERY FUNNY, PAPPY!” shouted Nick and then groaning as his younger brothers joined in the teasing.
The women smiled at each other and admired the bride before them. The wedding dress was made of silk. The bodice was intertwined with beads and dainty lace, the neckline was rounded and reflected just a hint of cleavage. The sleeves of the dress were short and her slender arms accented by the long white gloves she wore. The skirt of the dress flared out and the long train flowed behind her. A tiara adorned the top of her head holding the long white veil in place. Holding her bouquet of white and pink roses accented with baby’s breath, she tried to quell the shaking in her legs.
“Suzanne, you look beautiful.” smiled Charity while Victoria and Sonja voiced their agreements.
“Thanks, Charity.” whispered Sue blinking back to fight the tears that were threatening to fall. “I can’t stop shaking.”
“Everyone’s nervous on their wedding day.” reassured Victoria with a smile.
Looking at her friend, Charity frowned, “Suzanne, you did leave your gun at home, didn’t you?”
Laughter from the women floated across the still air. The brothers grinned when they heard the shocked statement as they walked by the tent to take their places, “OF COURSE, I LEFT MY GUN AT HOME. WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THAT?”

Sue looked up in surprise and anticipation at the others when the sound of music floated into the tent. Stepping inside the tent, Bill walked over and kissed her cheeks. “You ready, boss?”
“Yes.” whispered Sue tightly squeezing the arm he offered.
Feeling the shaking of the woman beside him, he smiled into her eyes, “I’m honored to be escorting you today, Sue. Your father would’ve been so proud.”
“Thank you, Bill.” said Sue softly placing a kiss on his weathered cheek. “There’s no one else, I’d rather have walk me down the aisle.”
Jenny and Jessica scattered white and pink rose petals on the white carpet running from the tent to the rose lined archway where the men of the wedding party stood waiting. Sonja and Charity walked slowly up the aisle in their pink dresses. Smiling widely at the anxious groom and the men beside him.
The orchestra started playing the wedding processional, the cue the Bardo twins were waiting for. Each took a flap of the tent and held it to the side. Smiling widely as they heard the gasp from their boss when her eyes caught a glimpse of the area before her.
The white carpet was lined on each side with candles, flickering and lighting the pathway in the setting sun. Two Yaqui patio crosses decorated with pink crepe paper roses and white ribbons signaled the start of the pathway. Seeing the sun setting and it’s colorful rays caressing the water of the lake, tears filled her eyes from the memory of their first date, so long ago.
Heath heard the increase in Nick’s breathing and saw the nervous clenching of his hands when he glimpsed the woman walking towards him. Heath poked him in the back and smiled slightly as he heard a whispered, “Thanks, little brother.”
The guests watched Bill slowly escort the bride up the aisle to the archway and stop. Tears fell onto her cheeks when Father Martinez turned, kissed her veiled cheek and asked the question, “Who gives this woman to be married to this man?”
“We do!” stated the happy members of her ranch crew.
Bill smiled and placed her trembling hand in the groom’s. He squeezed the joined hands before stepping back and taking a seat in the first row of chairs.
Under the setting sun, the family and closest friends of the couple listened as they exchanged vows. Lifting the veil, Nick smiled at the love shining out from the tear filled emerald eyes and whispered in a husky voice before kissing the trembling lips, “Mrs. Barkley.”
Holding on and deepening the kiss, the couple heard the sounds of cheers and hollering reaching through the sound of the blood rushing through their veins. Reluctantly breaking the kiss off, Nick lifted her left hand and kissed the emerald and diamond ring. Turning, the couple kissed and hugged the guests before Nick hurried her into the waiting buggy decorated with pink and white ribbons.
Reaching the depot, Nick carried her up the steps into the private car and pulled the shades on the windows and locked the doors. The train pulled out of the station towards the secluded beach house he had chosen for the honeymoon.
Pouring two glasses of champagne, he walked over and tenderly kissed her lips. Interlocking their arms, Sue stared into the hazel eyes warm with emotion and sipped her champagne. Reaching over, she took his glass and set them on the table.
Taking off his suitcoat, she slowly laid it on the back of the chair. Untying the black string tie, she threw it over her shoulder, his vest and crisp white shirt following shortly after, her fingertips running over his hardened chest and stomach before his dress pants and boots landed on the floor. Standing in front of his bride with his full glory exposed, fingers trembling with excitement, he reached around her and slowly unbuttoned the white dress caressing her skin as he slid it off her body and down to the floor.
The laces of the corset were opened and he lifted it above her arms. Leaning down, he tenderly nibbled each pink bud and she moaned in response. Sliding her stockings down her legs, he picked her up and held her in his arms, hungrily kissing the lips that sought his. Running their hands over each other’s skin, they tortured and pleased each other with lips burning with passion and need.
Wrapping her legs around him, their gasps of fulfillment sounded as one and they wildly gave into the need to feel the rushing throngs of desire and burning within them. Holding on tightly, they were afraid to let go once they had crossed the threshold of the long awaited climax and lay in each other’s arms.
Pushing Nick onto his back, Sue sat on him and smiled down at the sweat soaked man. “Darling, it’s gonna be a long honeymoon.”
Reaching up, Nick stroked the sweaty cheek and grinned widely, “Honey, it’s gonna be a long marriage.”
Laughing, she leaned down and kissed his lips, “With lots of babies. I love you, Nicholas Barkley.”
Sitting up and nibbling on her ear, he shifted her on his lap and her moan of pleasure burned the flames higher as he whispered, “Lots of babies. I love you, Suzanne Weston-Barkley.”
