Warriors Close Reign In SSL With
Fourth Title In Five Years

It was a fitting end to their run in the South Sequoia League last Thursday night, with the Warriors dominating in all facets of the game in a convincing 42-8 win over Taft.

With the victory, Tehachapi marked the second-straight season that they finished league play with an undefeated 5-0 record, winning their fourth championship in five years and nine overall since joining the league in 1992.

Tehachapi (9-1; 5-0 SSL) won their undisputed league championship with strong play in the first half, taking a 28-0 lead behind two touchdowns from Wyatt Vance and a pair of running scores from Cory Lange and Marcus Curiel.

Overall, Vance finished with a season-high 183 yards on 16 carries, putting his rushing total above the four-digit mark this the season with 1,059 yards overall. In only one half of action, Lange finished with a catch for 32 yards from quarterback Bobby Howell and 31 yards rushing, while Curiel had 72 yards on six carries in a short night.

Defensively, the Warriors recorded a field goal block and a fumble recovery, holding the Taft running attack to a meager 97 yards on the ground. Dalton Scaggs was also a perfect 6-6 on point after attempts, while Blake Waters had two touchbacks on kickoffs and a punt that rolled inside the 20 yard line.

In the second half, sophomores Christian Terle rumbled for 58 yards and a touchdown and David Carter had a fourth quarter goal line score. Barry Jones also had a strong rushing game with 32 yards on the ground.

Starting next year, the Warriors will join the Southeast Yosemite League, becoming the sixth member of the league that already has Garces, Foothill, North, Highland and East among its ranks.

Tehachapi will start the playoffs next Friday night, receiving a bye in the first round with a no.4 seed in Division II. Mountain Football will take on no.5 seed Sunnyside-Fresno at Coy Burnett Field on Nov.25 in a rematch of last year's quarterfinals. The game will start at 7 p.m.

Warriors Win SSL In Final Season

TEHACHAPI -- Wyatt Vance gained 183 yards on 16 carries and scored two TDs to help the Warriors clinch the South Sequoia League title.

After forcing a punt to start the game, Tehachapi (9-1, 5-0 SSL) needed only five plays to score on its first drive, capped by Vance's 9-yard TD run.

Tehachapi amassed 454 rushing yards.

Marcus Curiel and Cory Lange also had TDs to help the Warriors go up 28-0 by halftime.

Christian Terle, Barry Jones and David Carter combined for 112 yards on the ground and two scores to ice the game for the Warriors in the third and fourth quarters.

Taft (2-7, 1-4 SSL) was led by Aaron Kolb, who had 54 yards rushing and 55 yards receiving.

Vaughn Richardson also connected with Riley Gant on a 5-yard TD pass with less than a minute left in the game for the Wildcats.

In its final year in the league, Tehachapi ended its reign in the SSL with four of the last five SSL championships, winning nine overall since joining the league in 1992.
