Warriors Win DIL Championship
Tehachapi Drops CIF Title Game To Carpinteria

The 1987 Warriors finished the season with an impressive 10-3-1 season record; 5-0 in league play to win the DIL championship. The Warriors nearly ran the table in the CIF playoffs winning three straight games before being defeated at home by the Carpinteria Warriors.

The Warriors coasted to wins in their first three non-league contests defeating Morro Bay 24-7; Rosamond 14-13; and Wasco 28-13. The Warriors were paced by the running game of Rick Sottile in each of those games.

In Week 4, the Warriors battled to a 7-7 tie against the Shafter High Generals. This was a defensive battle the entire game as the Warriors managed only 106 total offensive yards. The Warriors scored in the 1st quarter on a short sustained drive capped by a one yard TD plunge by Rick Vance. Jason George kicked the PAT.

In Week 5, the Warriors met the defending SSL champion Garces Rams. In the 1986 contest, the Warriors had upset the Rams 7-6 on the mountain. This year would be different as the Rams dominated the Warriors in a 30-0 shutout. The Warriors managed only 38 yads rushing and QB Christenson was sacked nine times.

In the opening round of DIL play, the Warriors outlasted the Desert High Scorpions, 16-6. The Week 6 victory included a 15 yd. field goal by George; an 11 yd. TD run by Jimmy Bryan; and a 3 yd. TD run by Dunlap (George PAT). Emerging Warrior running back Jimmy Bryan picked up 86 yds. rushing and QB Christenson was 4-12 passing, good for 74 yds.

In Week 7, the Warriors improved to 2-0 in DIL play with a well earned 14-6 win over Kern Valley. QB Christensen completed just two passes --- but they were both completed to end Richard Dieterle for gains of 29 yards and 53 yards. The 29 yarded was good for a TD and the 53 yarder set-up a short 3 yd. Sottile TD run. George connected on both PAT's.

In Week 8, the Warriors defeated Bishop 10-7 in Bishop. Jason George scored first for the Warriors on a 20 yd. field goal and Jimmy Bryan scored the game winning TD with just over 4 minutes left in the game on a one yd. plunge. The Warrior running game was solid as Sottile picked up 112 yards on 17 carries and Bryan added 85 yards.

The Warriors closed out DIL play by blowing out Paralcete 26-0 in Week 9 and Mojave 33-7 in Week 10.

The DIL champion Warriors earned a home game for the playoffs and delighted the hometown crowd with a thrilling 19-8 win over Valley Christian in the 1st round of the playoffs. Jimmy Bryan scored two TD's on 113 yards rushing.

In the second round, the Warriors hosted Big Bear and Jimmy Bryan continued his fine play by scoring 3 TD's and rushed for 127 yards in a 25-23 win over Big Bear.

In round three, the Warriors traveled into the High Sierra's to play the Mammoth Huskies. Bryan had his finest game as a Warrior scoring 2 TD's and rushing for 179 yards in a 19-7 win.

In the CIF finals, on a bitter cold night, the Warriors played host to the Carpinteria Warriors. Before an estimated crowd of 4,000 fans, the coastal Warriors recorded their 8th shutout of the season in blanking Tehachapi, 27-0. Carpinteria was the champion of the Tri-Valley League and finished the season at 14-0. Carp was led by 5' 3" all-purpose player Emilio Handall who scored 3 TD's behind the signal calling of QB Coley Candaele.

All-league first team selections for the Warriors include Richard Dieterle (end), Scott Wells (lineman), Kevin Caudle (center), and Jimmy Bryan (back & punter) on offense. On defense, Ryder White (lineman), Rick Vance (linebacker), Dayson Mezey (lineman), Jason George (kicker), and Troy DeMontmorency (lineman) were all league first team selections.

Bryan and Hogue were also selected to the prestigous All-CIF Southern Section Inland Conference 1st team.
