Shafter High Wins Sierra League

Under second year coach Eric Stone, the 1938 Warriors finished with a final season record of 2-6 (1-3 in South Sierra League play).
The team had a large roster of 23 players and were led by Chesley Johnson who paced the team with 4 TD's for the season.

Shafter High won the Sierra League Championship in 1938. The league consisted of five schools.

According to the September 16, 1938 Tehachapi News, "grass was planted on the football field last spring so the games will be more enjoyable for the players and the spectators for the Fall 1938 season."

The Warriors earned their first win of the season in Week 5 with a thrilling come from behind 13-6 victory over Lone Pine. Lone Pine took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter;
the Warriors tied the game in the third quarter on a Mendoza-to-Johnson 10 yard TD pass; and Tehachapi won the game in the final quarter on a Morentin end around TD run.

In their final game of the season, the Warriors traveled to Bakersfield to play East High School at historic Griffith Field. East was a new high school featuring a roster of
underclassmen (the team had no juniors or seniors). The Warriors whipped the Blades 31-0 behind Bernie Mendoza's two TD's.
