Warriors Dominate In Homecoming Victory

Posted by The Tehachapi News on October 22, 2017.

In high school football, you always want to make sure that you have the best game of the season during homecoming.

With Coy Burnett Field filled to capacity, the Warriors did that in emphatic fashion last Friday night, controlling all phases of the game in a 37-0 shutout win over Golden Valley.

Tehachapi (3-5; 2-1 SYL) played the majority of the game on offense, reeling out long sustaining yard-churning drives and capping them with short-yardage touchdown runs.

Overall, the Warrior offensive line opened up gaping holes that paved the way for 255 yards (over five yards per carry) against Golden Valley (2-6; 0-3 SYL).

“It was our most consistent game by far,” said head coach Doug DeGeer. “Our offensive line and runners did a great job. We were able to do everything that we wanted to tonight.”

Leading the way on offense was a smash mouth, bulldozer duo of Hayden Palmer and Garrett Curry, who ran for a combined 185 yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns. Palmer had 81 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns, while Curry had 104 yards rushing and a second quarter touchdown run. Tanner Love also had a strong night with 84 yards from scrimmage, 39 yards rushing and a 45-yard kickoff return.

“We played great up-tempo ball, the whole team brought it tonight,” said Curry. “If we play as a unit and get the rock rolling, we are tough to stop. It was a good week of practice and that led to the win.”

Homecoming festivities serving as a great motivator to productive practices was a sentiment echoed by the Warrior coaching staff.

“We had a great week of practice. Our guys were focused and that correlated to the win,” added DeGeer. “It was great to see our offense play up to the level of our defense.”

Leading the defense in the shutout victory was Patrick Grimes, who led the team with eight total tackles, followed by Sean Schulgen with seven tackles.

Trevor Medovitch also had a handful of highlights in the secondary, recording two tackles, a caused fumble and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a 31-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Other defensive leaders included Dylan Ragsdale (six tackles, two fumble recoveries), Noah Howell (six tackles), Connor Timm (five tackles), Luke Soto (five tackles, fumble recovery), Dylan Hanzel (five tackles), Favian Garcia (five tackles), Dominic Counihan (four tackles), Peyton Stowers (four tackles), Rory Bishop (four tackles, fumble recovery) and Mason Kiernan (two tackles).

On special teams, Ragsdale registered a 24-yard field goal right before halftime and booted two kickoffs that went for touchback.

“We are moving in the right direction. We definitely want to keep this going, playing at a high level,” DeGeer said.

Mountain Football will have another home contest this Friday night against Ridgeview. Kickoff will be at 7:30 pm.
