Jameson Freymond had a big night for the Warriors.

TEHACHAPI DOWNS GARCES, 21-3

Jameson Freymond and Nelson Godschalk typified Tehachapi High, which played without three key players, yet defeated rival Garces 21-3 Friday night.

Freymond and Godschalk were opportunistic, stepping up when their team needed them to and helping lead the Warriors to a non-league victory.

Freymond, the Warriors' 5-7 quarterback, led the offense and converted three times on fourth-and-short situations. Godschalk blocked a punt and recovered it, setting up Tehachapi's final touchdown.

The Warriors' three touchdowns were converted from two turnovers and a Garces error on a punt attempt. "A lot of kids had to step up and the did," Tehachapi coach Steve Denman said. "I think now we'll have competition on our team. Hopefully we will get some of our guys back."

The Warriors (2-3) were playing without key players because of injury. Quarterback Tyler Hansen, who was diagnosed with mononucleosis hours before last week's game, missed another game. Running back Sean Finley, who has 641 yards and 8 TD's this season, was out with a bruised shoulder. Dan Haycock, a starting linebacker, was also out with a leg injury for the Warriors.

Denman states he hopes to get Finley back next week, and the Warriors are not sure about the return of the other two. They'll open SSL play next week at home against Wasco.

For the past 10 years, the Warriors have battled Garces in the SSL. But this year, Garces (1-4) has moved into the Southeast Yosemite League.

Since joining the SSL in 1993, either Tehachapi or Garces has shared the league title or shared it with another school. The Warriors now lead the overall series (15-13-2) that began in 1948.

"I realized that this is a huge rivalry," Freymond said. "We came in here and made a huge improvement from last week (a 30-6 loss to #1 County ranked Stockdale). This is what we wanted".

After a scoreless first quarter, the Warriors got on the scoreboard. They were helped by a Garces miscue. With 6:39 remaining in the first half, the Rams' punter's knee hit the ground while fielding a bad snap on a punt attempt. Tehachapi then started its scoring drive on the Garces 48.

The Warriors went 11 plays in 5:31, converting on two fourth-and-1 plays, the latter coming on a fourth-and-goal. Freymond scored on a sneak.

Senior short yardage specialist Mike Faulkner helped the Warriors get a first down during the scoring drive. He ran for just over one yard on a fourth-and-1 from the Garces 11.
