Big Play Offense Takes Out East On Homecoming

Posted by The Tehachapi News Sports Staff on October 7, 2023.

Mountain Football only had 28 total plays of offense against East on homecoming, but the Warriors took full advantage of their opportunities,
scoring on eight of them in a 58-19 blowout victory over East.

Tehachapi (8-0, 2-0 SYML) recorded a season-high 510 total yards, with 203 of those yards and four passing touchdowns
also a season high from quarterback Jacob Root.

Root connected with AJ Anderson on two touchdown receptions of 48 and 16 yards and Karson Tiewater and Kaleb Songer for touchdown
receptions of 74 and 24 yards, respectively. Cyler Hoofard also had a 41-yard reception in the second quarter.

The four scores gives Root 15 passing touchdowns on the year, surpassing Erik Oberg from the 1981 season (who had 14 passing touchdowns)
for the second most touchdown passes in school history.

Mike Jones opened the game on the first play from scrimmage with a 57-yard touchdown run and
finished with 86 yards rushing on the evening.

Anderson finished the night with 174 all-purpose yards (110 rushing, 64 yards receiving) and Tiewater had 151 all-purpose yards (77 rushing,
74 receiving), with both players logging in three touchdowns each.

On special teams, Carter Kolesar had a standout game with a safety tackle of the East punter, recording two kickoff touchbacks
and going a perfect 8 for 8 on point after attempts. According to thswarriors.com, Kolesar’s eight
PATs ties a THS record set by Jake Reimer in 2008, when eight PATs were recorded in a playoff
win over Oakhurst. Jacob Betancourt also had a PAT block in other special teams highlights.

Defensively, Andrew Aguirre had a big night with 18 tackles and a pass deflection, followed by Leo Gonzalez (11 tackles, five hurries, sack),
Jones (11 tackles), Tanner Gary (nine tackles, sack), Mark Nicholson Jr (eight tackles)
Tylere Lombardi (eight tackles), Anderson (seven tackles), Tiewater (six tackles), Kolesar (five tackles), Levi Hart (five tackles,
five hurries, sack), Ruben Sedano (four tackles, fumble caused), Adrian Navarro (four tackles, sack) and Kenny Pitt (sack).

The victory sets up a SYML title showdown with North this week. The Stars are coming off a 63-21 victory over Mira Monte.

Kickoff against North will be this Thursday evening at Coy Burnett Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Junior Varsity Records Shutout Over East

The Warriors played only one half of football but came away with a 21-0 victory over East.

Tehachapi (5-2, 2-0 SYML) faced a lengthy delay in the second half when the ambulance had to
transport an East player to the hospital. Per KHSD rules, which East High is a member of,
an ambulance has to be on site for football contests at all times. Without an ambulance
available, officials elected to end the game
early so the varsity contest could start on time.

Despite playing just over two quarters, Kaidon Hagerty had a strong afternoon with 103 yards rushing, a touchdown and a two-point
conversion run, and Colton Michael had 57 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns.

On defense, Danny Gonzalez (five tackles) and JR Alaniz (four tackles, sack) had standout performances.

The junior varsity will have another contest at home this Thursday against North. Kickoff will be at 5 p.m.

In Frosh-Soph action, the Warriors dropped a 41-0 decision to Delano-Chavez. The frosh-soph team will have a bye this week before
taking on Foothill next Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in Bakersfield.
