Warriors Run Through Blades
Tehachapi Overwhelms East, 34-6

Posted on October 21, 2014 by Tom Shea, The Tehachapi News

Led by a dominating performance by the offensive line and a big night from Chris Rhodes, Tehachapi's running game plowed through East in a 34-6 victory last Friday night at Coy Burnett Field.

Rhodes was the workhorse, recording 194 yards on 22 carries and scoring all five touchdowns for Mountain Football. The five touchdowns put Rhodes in elite company, putting him second all-time in Warrior history for touchdowns scored in one game. The standout running back joins Skylar Valencia (2013 vs. North), Christian Terle (2013 vs. East), Dustin McBride (2000 vs. Arvin) and Wilbur Griffin (1942 vs. Maricopa) to earn the achievement.

Tehachapi (5-2; 2-0 SYL) recorded 338 rushing yards overall, with Willy Urciel recording 81 yards and Keyron Scott 52 yards to help pace the ground game. Nic Ledesma, Noah Whitlach and Nick Steele also combined for 26 yards rushing.

On defense, the Warriors almost had a shutout before East recorded a last-second touchdown in the fourth quarter. Israel Guerrero had five tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery to help control the line of scrimmage. Ethan Averett had a sack, Daniel Wight and Tanner Herman had interceptions and Connor O'Neal had a sack in other highlights.

Abraham Katona had a standout performance on special teams, recording four touchbacks and a booming punt that went 53 yards. The punt also had a five-second hang time and came to a stop at the East one-yard line.

With the victory, Tehachapi is tied with Ridgeview for first place in the league standings with a 2-0 record. The Warriors will take on Golden Valley this Friday night in Bakersfield. Last week, the Bulldogs lost 47-7 to Independence.

The game against Golden Valley will start at 7:30 p.m.
