Bakersfield Christian at Tehachapi

September 15, 2017

The story Friday night at Coy Burnett Field in Tehachapi was the passing of Bakersfield Christian QB Braden Wingle. Wingle (6'5" 205 lbs.), a D1 college prospect,
threw for 386 yards, completing 27 of 42 passes and 4 TD passes. Wingle led the Eagles to an easy win over the Warriors,
39-13. Things get even tougher for Tehachapi as they travel to Lancaster next Friday night to play the highly touted Paraclete Spirits,
56-28 winners over previously undefeated Burroughs.   Photo by Nick Ellis, The Bakersfield Californian.

Wingle Throws 4 TD's
As BCHS Soars Past Tehachapi

TEHACHAPI – It didn’t take long for Bakersfield Christian to flex its muscles against host Tehachapi.

Two plays after the opening kickoff to be exact.

On the second play from scrimmage Eagles’ quarterback Braden Wingle connected with Alex Wallace on a simple pass play. Wallace did the rest and turned the short pass into a 61-yard touchdown reception as he outsprinted the Warriors’ defense for the score.

That was a little taste of what was to come for the rest of the game as Bakersfield Christian had no problems with Tehachapi, cruising to an easy 39-13 victory, Friday night at Tehachapi High School.

“Tonight we played as a team. This is the first time this season my knee felt good,” said Wingle, who said he tore part of his MCL. “We played physical, fast and smart. I am very pleased with this victory.”

Wingle decimated Tehachapi’s secondary with surgical precision as he finished the game 27-of-42 for 386 yards and four touchdowns. Wingle connected with eight different receivers, seven of those which caught three or more passes each. At one point in the game, Wingle completed eight straight passes and 12-of-14.

On their next possession following their first score, the Eagles (3-1) forced the Warriors to punt. Wallace fielded the ball at his own 48-yard line and returned it to Tehachapi’s 3-yard line. Two plays later, Jason Gauthier bullied his way into the end zone giving Bakersfield Christian a 14-0 lead.

Wingle added two more touchdown passes in the second quarter on touchdowns of five yards and 46 yards to Devyon Miller and Wallace respectively. The Eagles took a commanding 27-0 lead into the locker room. His final touchdown of the game came on a 5-yarder to Ben Yurosek in the fourth quarter.

It was a tale of two weeks for Tehachapi’s rushing attack. In their victory against Garces last week, the Warriors piled up 304 total rushing yards. Against Bakersfield Christian’s stingy defense, Tehachapi could only muster 79.

The Warriors scored on a pair of fortuitous touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with the Eagles well ahead. Tehachapi’s Patrick Grimes picked up a backwards lateral pass and returned it 63 yards for the score. Still the Warriors trailed 30-7 at that point.

Later in the fourth quarter, quarterback Chris Garcia connected with Tanner Love in tight coverage as the ball was tipped and landed in Love’s hands for an 80-yard touchdown. However, the Warriors’ offense only accounted for three first downs.

Over a span of three games, Tehachapi’s defense has allowed a total of 934 yards through the air.
