Warrior Girls Pronounced Ready For SYL Season

It's just about league time, and Warriors girls basketball coach Jacques Vachon thinks the timing is perfect.

“The team is now ready for league,” Vachon said after the Warriors scored two lopsided victories, 63-19 over Rosamond on
Tuesday, Jan. 3, and 58-12 at Mira Monte on Thursday, Jan 5.

The Warriors had one final preseason game scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 10, at home against Highland.

“We are very confident about that game,” Vachon said. “If we perform consistently against them, we will be ready to face Independence.”

The Warriors open their South Yosemite League season on Friday, Jan. 13, at Independence.

Senior guard Fiona Ferry led all scorers against Rosamond with 21 points, and freshman Irey Sandholdt had 12. Another freshman,
Teagan Thurman, and sophomore Mady Cotto controlled the boards, combining for double digits in rebounding.

“The improvement showed against Mira Monte,” Vachon said. “Although Mira Monte is in a lower division, they are stronger than Rosamond.

“Our defense did a much better job of shifting and adjusting to their offense, and they did not let up for all four quarters.”

Ferry ran the offense from her point guard position while Sandholdt and Thurman scored 19 points apiece against Mira Monte.
Once again, Thurman and Cotta spearheaded the defense by controlling the boards for the Warriors.

“Our offense also showed up strong, playing all four quarters,” Vachon said. “We moved the ball well and adjusted well to what the defense was presenting.”
