Rough Week For Mountain Basketball
Garces and East Both Top Warriors

Posted by Tom Shea, The Tehachapi News, on February 12, 2014

The Warriors entered into the week as co-leaders in the SEYL title race, but after a 71-62 loss to Garces and a 62-59 overtime loss to East, the Warriors are currently in a second place tie in the league standings with four games remaining in the regular season.

Tehachapi (15-7; 4-2 SEYL) went into a boisterous and hostile Garces gym last Tuesday, hanging tough with the Rams through two quarters and going into the locker room down by a modest 31-26 score.

However, Garces went on a big run in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 29-11 in the period to virtually put the game away.

Isaiah Johnson finished as the leading scorer for Tehachapi with 22 points, followed by Chris Llamas with 18 points, all coming by way of three-pointers. Jonny Saavedra had five points and Phil Baquerizo and Daniel Wight each had four points to highlight other scoring.

Two days later against East, the Warriors nearly swept the season series before the Blades squeezed out a 62-59 overtime win in their home gym in Bakersfield.

Saavedra nearly had a game-winning three-pointer that rimmed out at the buzzer in regulation before the game into overtime, 51-51.

The Warriors were handicapped right from the opening tip without the services of Llamas, who was suffering from a bad case of the flu.

Despite not having Llamas, the Warriors kept the contest close, with Johnson finishing with 29 points and nine rebounds and Medovitch closing with a double-double 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Micah Fjeld also had five points and eight rebounds, Saavedra had six points and Mikey Phillips had a basket.

Mountain Basketball will look to get back on the winning track this Wednesday with a home game against North. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
