Warriors Pull Away in 4th Quarter to Defeat Titans

After three quarters, the Warriors were only nursing a one-point lead, but a big fourth quarter proved to be the difference in a 68-60 victory over Frontier.

Tehachapi (11-5) opened up the first quarter with a 7-0 deficit against the upstart Titans, but came back to take a 15-14 first quarter lead. Both the second and third quarters would end up in a deadlock for both squads, with the Warriors taking a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mountain Basketball pulled away early in the final period, with Dakota Medovitch, Micah Fjeld and Chris Llamas all recording layups to help spark a 7-1 run and a 50-43 lead.

Isaiah Johnson put the exclamation point on the victory with a fade away bucket and fast break dunk for a 57-45 advantage. Overall, Johnson had another standout performance for Mountain Basketball in the win, registering 30 points, the second most points in one game this season for the junior guard.

Caeleb Roney was second on the team in scoring with 15 points, followed by Fjeld with 12 points, Llamas and Medovitch with four points each and Jonny Saavedra with three points.

In the jayvee contest, Daniel Wight and Ryan Kelly both had 11 points scored in a in a 50-37 loss. Other scorers included Jacob Burt with six points, Jesus Sanchez with four points and Jon Danielson and Jack Salzman each with a bucket.

The previous week, the Braves suffered a 35-30 loss to Rosamond. Burt had seven points in that game, followed by Wight with six, Bryan Cotta and Sanchez with four points each, Salzman with three points and Daniel Viselli, Jacob Gonzales and Kelly with two points apiece.

Lady Warriors Win GV Tourney Crown;
THS Wins Belated Championship Victory Over Bulldogs

The Lady Warriors were forced to postpone the tourney final against host Golden Valley in early December due to a Highway 58 closure, but the long awaited championship game proved to be golden for Mountain Basketball in a 40-35 victory over the Bulldogs last Thursday.

Tehachapi (13-4) avenged an earlier loss to Golden Valley in their first pre-season game of the year with a win in the tourney championship, led by all-tournament selections Alyssa Garcia and Dani Peacon.

Garcia went an astounding 22 for 23 at the free-throw line, finishing with 24 points and eight steals overall. Peacon added eight points and seven steals, while Shelby Ricker and Laney Ricker both drained three-pointers.

Leading in rebounds was Brooke Boyd and Kelsey Vance with six boards apiece, followed by Daisy Moran with five rebounds and Kelsey Vance with a bucket and four steals.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Warriors also recorded a 47-36 win on the road against Frontier.

Garcia was the leading scorer 24 points, with another stellar performance at the free throw line by going a perfect 11 for 11.

Other leaders included Leja Jakstaite with six points and six rebounds, Peacon with five points and four steals and Moran with four points and four rebounds. Noemi Lorenz and Lexi Garrett also recorded a rebound as well in the contest.

Mountain Basketball will start league play this week, with an away game against Highland on Thursday. The contest will start at 6:30 p.m.
