Mountain Basketball took on some of the top teams in the Central Section last week in the Lloyd Williams -- Kern Schools Federal Credit Union Shootout at North High School.

Tehachapi (6-3) opened up the tournament with a 63-57 win over West and closed the weekend with a 66-59 victory over Monache for seventh place overall.

In last Saturday's win over Monache, Isaiah Johnson was the leading scorer on the afternoon with 29 points, including three three-pointers and a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line.

The Warriors were down 23-14 in the second quarter against Monache when Johnson and Jonny Saavedra nailed back-to-back three pointers to cut the deficit. Micah Fjeld and Johnson then registered two consecutive layups in the final minute of the second quarter to help the Warriors go up at halftime, 27-25.

Mountain Basketball extended their lead to as much as 12 points in the second half to coast to the victory. Jonny Saavedra finished with 18 points, followed by Caeleb Roney with seven points and Chris Llamas with five points.

In the victory over West to open the tournament, Johnson was the leading scorer with 24, followed by Roney with 11 points, Saavedra with 10 points, Nathan Hedberg with eight points and Fjeld with seven points.

The Warriors also had two losses in the tournament to Stockdale (61-54) and Bakersfield (60-46). Roney was the leading scorer against Stockdale with 15 points and Johnson had a team-high 17 points against the Drillers.

For his efforts, Johnson was named to the all-tournament team, having also been named all-tourney in the Roadrunner Classic at Rosamond earlier this month.

In other team news, according to THS coach Chris Olofson, Nick Madden is scheduled to have an MRI within the next few weeks to assess the extent of a knee injury suffered in the final game of the Roadrunner Classic. The Warriors were scheduled to play against Paraclete for the tourney championship on Dec. 14, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather. A makeup date for the tourney title is unlikely.

Mountain Basketball will be back in action again on Monday, Dec. 30 against Bakersfield Christian in the Garces Tournament. The game against BCHS will be at 10:30 a.m. in the Garces High Gym.
