Warriors In Championship Game
In Annual Rosamond Tournament

After suffering a defeat against Paraclete in their first game of the season, it looks like the Warriors might get an opportunity to avenge the loss.

Tehachapi (4-1) opened up the week with a convincing 60-38 victory over Burroughs at home, and then steamrolled to a trio of victories in the Roadrunner Classic in Rosamond to set up a rematch with Paraclete in the tourney final.

The Warriors dominated Burroughs on Tuesday, with Mountain Basketball riding the hot hand of junior Isaiah Johnson in the big win.

Johnson led the team with 29 points and six three pointers, including five in a row between the first and second quarters.

Jonny Saavedra also contributed with 13 points, followed by Caeleb Roney, Nathan Hedberg and Chris Llamas with four points each.

Micah Fjeld, playing in his first game since the football season ended, also chipped in with two points and was among the team leaders in rebounds.

In the Roadrunner Classic, THS steamrolled to wins over Lancaster Baptist (77-60), Burroughs (58-41) and Desert (62-40) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, respectively.

However, the win over Desert hit a sour note when talented wing/post player Nick Madden suffered a knee injury with five minutes remaining in the game and had to be taken away by ambulance.

The severity of Madden's injury and his status for the rest of the season will be updated in a future edition of the Tehachapi News.

Due to the closure of Highway 58, the Saturday tourney championship with Paraclete will be postponed to a later date.

The season will continue for THS this week in the Kern Schools Federal Credit Union Tourney in Bakersfield, with a first round game against West on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

After starting the season with two losses, Mountain Basketball rebounded with an impressive performance in last week's Golden Valley Invitational.

The Lady Warriors defeated East (52-4), West (47-32) and Bakersfield (25-23) to reach the championship game against Golden Valley.

Against East, Tehachapi (3-2) raced out to a 21-0 lead at halftime en route to the big win. Every single Lady Warrior scored in the contest, with Alyssa Garcia, Daisy Moran and Dani Peacon leading the team with nine points, Brandi Davidson, Kelsey Vance, Shelby Ricker, Brooke Boyd and Laney Ricker each with four points, Kayla Trevino and Leja Jakstaite each with two points and Lexi Garrett with a point. Peacon and Shelby Ricker both had four steals and Jakstaite had a team leading seven rebounds in the win.

The momentum carried over to a win against West, with Garcia scoring 14 points and Shelby Ricker and Peacon both scoring in double-digits with 10 points apiece. Garcia recorded a solid all-around game with nine rebounds and six steals, while Peacon had five steals.

The preliminary round of the tournament ended with a win over the Bakersfield Drillers, with Garcia leading the way with 11 points and four steals and Boyd recording five rebounds and four steals. Jakstaite also had four points and six boards.

The final against Golden Valley was scheduled for this past Saturday, but had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. The new date for the championship was not immediately available at press time.

Earlier last the week, Tehachapi suffered a 50-26 loss to Burroughs. Garcia led the team with 10 points and five rebounds, while Jakstaite had seven rebounds and Moran and Boyd had five rebounds each.

Tehachapi will have back-to-back games this Thursday in the Shafter Tournament, taking on Hanford West at 5 p.m. and North at 7 p.m.
