Spirits Spoil Home THS Debut
Warriors Edged By Paraclete In Opener, 59-53

Just one year ago, Paraclete defeated the Warriors in a pair of early season double-digit wins.

While this season's Spirit victory was not quite as decisive, the Spirits still managed to slip past the Warriors, 59-53, in the season opener.

Both teams started out cold offensively, with Paraclete clinging to a paltry 6-5 first quarter lead to start the game.

The Spirits would eventually extend their advantage before halftime, going into the locker room with a six-point lead, 22-16.

Tehachapi (0-1) would keep the contest within two baskets for the majority of the second period, thanks in part to an Isaiah Johnson fast break slam dunk midway through the third quarter.

Near the beginning of the final period, Johnson connected on a foul shot to complete a three point play and cut the Paraclete lead, 34-32.

However, that was as close as Mountain Basketball would get, with Paraclete cruising to the rest of the way in a high scoring fourth quarter.

Johnson finished as the leading scorer for the Warriors with 23 points on the night, including four three pointers. Caeleb Roney also chipped in with 13 points and a 3-4 performance at the free-throw line.

Jonny Saavedra added 10 points, including three three-pointers, and Andrew Borst had four points.

Tehachapi will continue their season with another home game this Tuesday against Burroughs-Ridgecrest. The game will start at 6:30 p.m.

The Warriors will also take part in the Rosamond Tournament this Wednesday through Saturday. Mountain Basketball will have early round games on Wednesday against Lancaster Baptist (3 p.m.), Thursday against Burroughs (4:30 p.m.) and Friday against Desert-Edwards AFB (4:30 p.m.). All tournament games will be held at Rosamond HS.

The Lady Warriors opened their first game of the season by sporting an 11-point lead at halftime, but the lead vanished in the fourth quarter in an eventual 47-43 loss to Golden Valley last Tuesday evening in Bakersfield.

Senior guard Alyssa Garcia shot 50 percent from the field, closing out the contest with 18 points, three three-pointers and 3-3 at the free throw line in the losing effort.

Dani Peacon, the Lady Warriors' sophomore point guard, also added seven points, while Shelby Ricker was the leading rebounder with eight boards and chipping in with five points.

Laney Ricker and Kayla Trevino had three steals each, Kelsey Vance had seven rebounds, and Leja Jakstaite and Brooke Boyd each had five rebounds. Brandi Davidson also added three points, all from the free throw line, and led the team with two assists.

Tehachapi (0-1) will look to bounce back this Tuesday in an away game against Burroughs Ridgecrest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Warriors will also return to Golden Valley for a pre-season tournament this Wednesday through Friday, with games scheduled against East (Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.), West (Thursday at 5:30 p.m.) and Bakersfield High (Friday at 4 p.m.).
