In Bakersfield, 66-56

The Warriors had an all-around improved performance in the second half to pull away from Golden Valley in a non-league contest, 66-56 last Tuesday evening in Bakersfield.

Tehachapi (7-9) found themselves down 27-24 at half, mainly due to the Bulldogs taking advantage of the Warriors' miscues on defense.

"(Golden Valley) was scoring on second chances. They did a good job on their putbacks," said head coach Chris Olofson. "We had a lot of turnovers and didn't rebound well in the first half, but that changed (after halftime.)"

Tehachapi shot 57 percent in the third and fourth quarter, which was a vast improvement over the 39 percent shooting from the first half. The Warriors also outscored Golden Valley 19-10 to start the second half to help build a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"We just took better care of the ball," added Olofson. "Our guys started to get in a flow of the game."

Freshman Point Guard Jonny Saavedra led the team in scoring with 20 points, followed by Isaiah Johnson with 16 points and Caleab Roney with 10 points. Ryan Flick, Dalton Scaggs, Dakota Medovitch, Nathan Hedberg and Micah Fjeld rounded out the rest of the scoring with a combined 20 points.

Mountain Basketball was scheduled to have their first home game of the season last Saturday against Yosemite and those results will be available in next week's paper.

League play is slated to start this week with a pair of away contests against East and Highland on Wednesday and Friday.

"League is very good this year and it starts with some two tough opponents this week," Olofson said. "We'll need to play our best basketball."
