Lady Warriors Pull Away In 4th Quarter

Two evenly matched basketball teams took the floor last Tuesday evening, and in the end, Tehachapi won their season home debut with a 47-44 victory over Burroughs.

With the score tied 25-25 at halftime, and Mountain Basketball used a 13-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to pull out the narrow win. Alyssa Garcia had an impressive night for Tehachapi (5-2), finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists, while also hitting two three point shots in the contest.

Also contributing to the winning effort was Danielle Simpson with 10 points and Madison Frey with eight points and six rebounds. Dani Peacon also had six points and seven rebounds and Rheanna Cowee had six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Later in the week, Tehachapi also recorded a pair of impressive wins in the Shafter Tournament with a 60-38 win over McFarland and a 57-42 win over Shafter.

Shafter was a previous league rival of Tehachapi in the South Sequoia League and the Generals were early favorites to win their own tournament before being upset. The Lady Warriors dominated the second and fourth quarters by outscoring the Lady Generals 32-12 in the periods combined to cruise to the victory.

Garcia had another huge game against Shafter, recording 23 points and five three pointers, while Cowee had nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the win. Peacon also had 11 points and a team high four assists.

Tehachapi also had tournament games last weekend against Liberty and Lindsay, which will be highlighted next week in The Tehachapi News.

Up next for the Lady Warriors is the Arvin Tournament, with early games scheduled against Wasco this Wednesday at 6 p.m. and West this Thursday at 4:45 p.m.

At Lloyd Williams Shootout in Bakersfield

The Warriors recorded a pair of wins earlier this month with a victory in the Rosamond Tournament over Desert Christian, 73-38, and a most recently in the Lloyd Williams – North Bakersfield Tournament over Golden Valley, 50-44.

Dalton Scaggs helped Tehachapi (2-7) pull away in the third quarter over Golden Valley with nine points in the period, finishing with 4-4 shooting at the free throw line. Caleab Roney was the high point scorer in the game with 12, followed by Isaiah Johnson with 10 points.

Jonny Saavedra led the win over Desert Christian with 13 points, followed by Chris Llamas with 12 points, Andrew Borst with 11 points, and Ryan Flick with 10 points. Steven Cross and Anthony Curiel also chipped in with seven points apiece.
