Basketball Preps For New Year
Mountain Cagers Start Pre-Season Next Week

Posted by Tom Shea, The Tehachapi News, on November 21, 2011

Mountain Basketball will soon be officially upon us, and the teams are starting to take shape for all six levels.

With a handful of varsity and jayvee athletes still participating in football, the official teams have not been finalized for the boys’ squads. Anywhere between five and six players from football will join the basketball team once the football playoffs have concluded.

However, there is a great deal of talent on the court and returnees from last year’s team. Vying for a spot on the varsity this season is Zach Poulson, Luke Henderson, Dee White, Darren Smith, Gabe Saavedra, Hunter Carroll, Tyler Beardsley, Justin Hedberg, Ryan Harris and Anthony Ehrlich.

The jayvee and freshmen teams have approximately 35 athletes trying out.

Coaching the varsity boys this year will be Chris Olofson and assisted by Larry Scaggs and Jim Clark.

Bruce Schkade will also serve as a dual varsity assistant coach and jayvee head coach. James Henderson will also assist Coach Schkade on the jayvee team and Louie Saavedra will coach the freshmen, assisted by Marcos Saavedra and Mo Cramer.

The Lady Warriors, Braves and Indians squads have already been set, with the varsity consisting of seniors Alexis Ashcraft, Paige Bennett, Sarah Breen, Meagan Kilchrist, A.J. Snider and Carley Cass, juniors Rheanna Cowee, Breana Gutierrez, Kalli Poulson, Alexis Schoenberg and Danielle Simpson and sophomore Alyssa Garcia.

Coaching the varsity girls this year will be Renn Amstead, assisted by Chelsea Dominguez. Coaching the underclassmen teams will be Clint Cass, Maura Smith, Kara Wesley and Miki Eberle.

The boys basketball teams will host Paraclete at home this upcoming Monday, Nov.28, starting at 4 p.m. The varsity girls basketball team will be participating in the Centennial Basketball Tournament next week, with first round games against Centennial (Tuesday - 7 p.m.), Golden Valley (Wednesday - 4:30 p.m.) and Highland (Friday - 4:30 p.m.).
