Head Coach Nevin McCormick
Coach Nevin McCormick coached the Warrior basketball teams for one season. In 1941-42, the Warrior varsity
"A" basketball team were a respectable 3-3 in South Sierra League play and 6-6 overall. As a tribute
to Mr. McCormick, the 1941-42 Tomahawk Yearbook said, "his congenial personality and inspiring leadership won the
hearts of all who came into contact with him."
Before coming to Tehachapi, Coach McCormick was a graduate of Notre Dame University, playing for the Fighting Irish
football team for two seasons as a halfback. McCormick played during the 1936 and 1937 fall seasons.
In his senior year at Notre Dame, McCormick, 5'8" 160 lbs., led the Irish with 347 rushing yards in 91 carries.
Nicknamed "Bunny", McCormick played in the 1938 College all-star game.
The Irish finished both the 1936 and 1937 campaigns with a 6-2-1 record. McCormick played for legendary head coach
Elmer Layden (1934-1940; 47-13-3). Layden left Notre Dame to become the Commissioner of the National Football League.
McCormick left Tehachapi because he was drafted by the military to serve the country during this time of War.
McCormick would return to his hometown of Livermore, CA where he had a distinguished public service career as a
school teacher and an Athletic Director at Livermore High School. He retired from the school district in 1974.
Nevin passed away in 2002 at the age of 88 years old.
