Lady Warriors Win CIF Small School Championship!
21 Win Season Sets School Record

In its fifth year as a program, under first year coach Sandy Powell, the Lady Warriors captured a CIF Southern Section small schools championship! The Warriors won five straight CIF playoff games to win the title enroute to a final 21-2 season record.

In pre-season play, the Lady Warriors reeled off eight straight victories, raising eyebrows around the County as a team to watch in 1979-80. The highlight of the pre-season schedule was winning the championship of the Mojave Invitational Tournament. All in one day, the Lady Warriors defeated Paraclete, Boron, and host Mojave in the finals, 50-44.

In league play, the Lady Warriors extended their winning streak to 10 straight games by knocking off Boron and Desert in their first two games. The streak ended though, as a fired up lady Mustang team upset the Lady Warriors in Mojave, 59-56.

In their next game, the Lady Warriors re-grouped quickly to defeat the Rosamond Roadrunners, 48-45. It was the first time the Warriors had defeated the Lady Roadrunners since the DIL was initiated in 1975-76.

The Lady Warriors won their next four games to set up a league showdown again with Rosamond. Both the Warriors and Roadrunners entered the game with 7-1 league records. In a tense game, the Runners' would prevail in by a narrow 41-39 margin before their hometown crowd. The lady Runners' would go on to win their fifth straight DIL title with a final 9-1 league record. Tehachapi finished in 2nd place at 8-2, with the Mojave loss proving to be the costly game of the season. This was also the first year the DIL was split into two divisions --- a north and a south division. The Runners' and the Lady Warriors were in the south division.

In CIF play, the Warriors crushed Serrano of Phelan, 59-19, and then for the third time in one season, defeated league foe Desert, 37-31. In the third round, the Warriors crushed Owens Valley, 61-27, before a delighted hometown crowd as Cindy Dodd scored 14 points.

In the semi-finals, the Warriors traveled to Atascadero to play Shandon High School, the defending CIF small school champions. Behind Buzz Ulrich's 28 points, the Warriors defeated Shandon, 57-44.

The championship game was held on the campus of Antelope Valley College in Lancaster as the "host" Warriors played Marshall of Pasadena. Ulrich again led the way with 16 points, as the Lady Warriors topped Marshall, 48-37.

Kelly "Buzz" Ulrich was the Team Most Valuable Player and earned both All-DIL and ALL-CIF first team honors. The senior guard led the team in scoring with a 13.9 points per game average.

Junior Yolanda Gaeta also earned ALL-DIL and ALL-CIF honors for her play, leading the Warriors in rebounding with a 9.5 average per game. Junior Cindy Dodd also earned ALL-DIL 2nd team honors.

The 21 victories in one season would stand as a school record for 24 years until the 2003-04 South Sequoia League champion Lady Warriors earned 23 wins in one season.
