Bearing Down On Arvin
Warriors Win Non-League Contest, 23-13

Posted by Tom Shea, The Tehachapi News on Sep. 15, 2012

Mountain Football played one of their most complete all-around games of the year on offense, defense and special teams to record a victory over Arvin 23-13 last Friday night at Coy Burnett Field.

The Bears came into the game with a perfect 3-0 record led behind an explosive running attack.

However, the Bears could not find an answer to the Warriors stout defensive line led by Kiefer Fincher and Logan Smith. Both players contributed to a fierce front wall that stuffed the middle of the line of scrimmage, yielding only a meager 89 yards rushing on the night. Smith also had an interception to end the game in the fourth quarter.

Angel Garcia controlled the outside from his defensive end position and registered a safety when he bulldozed an Arvin player in to a punt, forcing the ball to ricochet off the Arvin player’s backside and through the endzone.

On offense, Jorge Garcia and Barry Jones were the workhorses, with Garcia finishing with a touchdown run of 57 yards in the first quarter and 144 yards overall. Jones had 90 yards on 18 carries.

Tehachapi also received a spark in the passing game from Chris Llamas, who took the helm under center with starting and backup quarterbacks Bobby Howell and Dalton Scaggs out due to injury.

Llamas had a productive night in his varsity debut, throwing three completions to Ryan Flick for 40 yards, with two completions going for touchdowns.

In special teams, Jeremy Duff was a perfect 3-3 on extra point attempts. Jones led the team in kickoff return yardage with 40 yards on two carries.

Tehachapi will have a bye this Friday night and will be in action against next week against West Bakersfield.
