Warriors Scoring Spree Overpowers Bears, 49-28

TEHACHAPI - The Bears looked posed for an upset in the early going against Tehachapi after a 63-yard punt return by Luis Moradel set up a 1-yard touchdown by Christian Lopez for an early 7-0 Arvin lead.

But the Warriors got their footing midway through the first quarter, reeling off five straight scoring drives to run away to a 49-28 win.

Tehachapi's Phil Rhodes provided big play ability, scoring three touchdowns and 135 yards rushing on 17 carries, while Jorge Garcia had a touchdown run and 78 yards rushing on four attempts.

Other Warrior offensive leaders included Cory Lange with two receptions from quarterback Levi Garrett for 78 yards, one going for a 46-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and Marcus Curiel scoring on a 5-yard run to help Tehachapi register 300 yards on the ground overall.

Michael Lowder provided the spark for the Warriors on special teams, scoring on a 95-yard kickoff return to open up the third quarter. Lowder also had two interceptions and David Lara had two sacks.

For Arvin, Christian Lopez had two rushing TDs.

High Scoring Warriors Dispatch Arvin

Posted October 27, 2010, by Tom Shea, The Tehachapi News

The Bears would draw the first points of what would end up being a high scoring affair last Friday night, but in the end, it was way too much Tehachapi and too often in a convincing 49-28 victory over Arvin.

Down 7-0 early in the first quarter, Phil Rhodes scored the first of what would be three touchdowns on the night, finding pay dirt on a 10 yard run with two minutes left in the first quarter. Rhodes would finish with a season-high 135 yards rushing on 17 carries, also scoring on a four yard run in the second quarter as the clock expired and the game's final points on a 56 yard run in the fourth quarter.

Jorge Garcia and Marcus Curiel also contributed to the rushing attack with a combined 109 yards on 13 carries, with both backs also scoring touchdowns on runs of 11 and five yards, respectively. Other rushers included Cory Lange, Brian Castaneda and Sklyar Stephens combining for 61 yards rushing.

Through the air, Levi Garrett found Cory Lange for a touchdown pass in the second straight week, hitting the talented receiver for a 46-yard completion to make the score 28-14 midway through the second quarter.

On defense, Michael Lowder had two interceptions, returning one for a 61-yard touchdown that was nullified on a penalty. Lowder would make up for the robbed score on the opening kickoff of the second half, blowing the game wide-open with a 95-yard return for a commanding Tehachapi 42-14 lead.

David Lara and Zach Timm also combined for three sacks in the defensive effort, while John Porter recovered an onside kick. Travis Farewell was also a perfect 7-7 on PATs.

Tehachapi (6-1; 2-0 SSL) moves on to play Bakersfield Christian (3-4; 1-1 SSL) this Friday night in Bakersfield.
