USSSA Class-A Regional Championship Explanation once again. NOTE The USSSA had their first "World Series" in 1968 in Milwaukee, WI. Fifty teams entered as Milwaukee's Mueller Pipe Liners beat Pittsburgh's BYM Club in the championship. An MVP and All World Team was selected. The same format took place the following year (1969) in the Pittsburgh suburb of New Kensington, PA. Once again, fifty teams entered and Jim's Sport Shop of Pittsburgh beat Floyd Warren's of nearby Irwin, PA in the championship. As with the first, an MVP and All World team was selected. Both of these events were played Labor Day Weekend.
When the USSSA had their annual meetings in early 1970, it was decided that they were going to hold two World Series that Labor Day Weekend: The Eastern World Series and the Western World Series. Then, the following year (1971) in June, the two Champions would meet in a best-of-7 "World Series" to determine the USSSA World Champ. In actuality, the USSSA had (2) world Champs in 1970. There was no "World Series" in 1970.
The Official USSSA World Series was to be held in 1971 between the (2) 1970 regional champs. East vs West for the USSSA World Series title and that winner would be declared the 1971 USSSA World Series Champion. And so it began in June, 1971. Accurate Welding of Milwaukee, who won the 1970 East World and Goettl's Metals of Arizona, who won the 1970 West World played a best of seven. Accurate won (4) straight to claim the World Series Title for 1971. No all world team was selected, just the MVP; Jim Mortl of Accurate Welding.
On Labor Day Weekend of 1971, the same scenario was played out, (2) separate Eastern and Western World Series, with the two winners once again meeting in June of 1972. This was the format that was used up until the 1973 World Series, when it was expanded to include a new region (Central Division) and also not just the Champions, but the runner-ups as well. The Defending champ was also given a berth as did the host team of the World Series.
So, in June of 1974, the 1973 East Champ (Croten Dukes of PA) and Eastern 2nd (Dino's of Detroit) received berths to the 1974 World Series as did the 1973 Central Champ and runner-up, Slinger Foundry of Milwaukee and Thurmer's Bar of St.Louis. The West was represented by Chandler Ready-Mix of Phoenix, who won the 1973 West World's as Double Tree Inn of Phoenix. Capitol Insulation of Los Angeles assumed the sponsorship of the 1973 West Runner-up team, The Association of Los Angeles. Defending 1973 champ, Bay Area Merchants (BAM) became the Host team and Defending 1973 Runner-up (Dino's Pizza) became the defending champ. This meant the 3rd place team in the 1973 East (Pace Electronics of Rochester) received the last berth as the East Runner-up. The Series was played as a standard double elimination tournament, won by Dino's Pizza of Detroit. Even with (8) teams entered in the event, no All World team was selected, just the MVP (Dino's Pitcher Joe Patti). This same format was used in 1974 also. 1974 East, Central and West teams played their Regional Worlds in September.
In 1975, things changed up a little, The 1975 Regional Worlds were played in June. That meant the 1975 World Series was to be an extraordinary event as the 1974 East, Central and West Champs (Sol Mintz of PA, Builders Hardware of Milwaukee and Copperstate of Phoenix were invited along with the 1975 Regional World Champs, which included Snyder's of Michigan in the East, Copper Hearth of Milwaukee for the Central and Capitol of Los Angeles for the West. These (6) teams along with 1974 defending champ Uniroyal of Detroit (Dino's Pizza under new sponsorship) and Rochester's, Mazzola Castle (formerly Pace), the 1975 East runnerup. Snyders prevailed over Sol Mintz as Doug Gerdes of Snyder's was named MVP and an All World team was selected this year. Things stayed basically the same for the next couple years, the only thing that changed was the 8th team, which was either the 3rd place team from the East or the Host team.
