After the tragic death of Kurt Cobain, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, who had written several songs during his tenuer with the band, decided to form a new band asw an outlet for the music. He met up with Sunny Day Real Estate's bassist and drummer (Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith) and with former Nirvana and Germs guitarist Pat Smear. Even though he was an excellent drummer, Dave had grown up playing the guitar and would be the lead vocalist. The name picked was Foo Fighters, which originates from an alleged World War II secret force that researched UFOs. The band's debut album, Foo Fighters, went platinum by 1996. After the long touring schedule, Goldsmith had had enough of it. He left the band after only playing on two of the songs from the next album, Doll and Up in Arms (slow). Dave chose Alanis Morissette drummer Taylor Hawkins to replace him, but not after Dave subbed in on the drums in the album, The Colour And The Shape. It was another popular album. During the 1997 MTV Music Awards Pat Smear left on the band during the performance. After producing There Is Nothing Left To Lose, the band added Seattle guitarist Chris Shefflet for touring.
