How to upgrade the Matrox BIOS Version 2.5


The following is a step-by-step description of how to upgrade the flash BIOS on the Matrox Millenium video card to version 2.5. IMPORTANT NOTICE!! These instructions are specific to the Matrox BIOS version 2.5. A newer version of this BIOS is now available at the Matrox web site and these instructions may no longer apply. They are provided merely as a convenience in the event that you want to install or reinstall version 2.5.

Note: The 10th Anniversary system will be referred to as the "P133A" in this document. All trademarks and registered trademarks are the property of their respective owners.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Flash BIOS version 2.5 is now available for the Matrox Millenium video card. The installation files can be obtained from the Matrox Forum on Compuserve (Go Matrox) and the Matrox web site (http://www.matrox.com). The file to download is called "bios250.zip". Unfortunately, a "readme" file is not included to provide instructions for installing the upgraded BIOS. For this reason, we have provided instructions below.


INSTRUCTIONS

To install the Matrox BIOS, follow these steps:

  1. Unzip the bios250.zip file to a temporary directory or floppy disk.
  2. One of the files that is created is another zip file called "files1.zip".
  3. Unzip "files1.zip" to a floppy disk.
  4. Power down your system.
  5. Disconnect the monitor cable.
  6. Open computer case and remove the Matrox card.
  7. Set the BIOS protect switch to "unprotected." To do this, locate the small black box with 2 DIP switches on the Matrox card. Set the number 1 switch to the 'ON' (unprotected) position.
  8. Reinstall the Matrox card (don't forget to re-attach the monitor cable.)
  9. Boot-up the system. When you see "Starting Windows 95", press F8.
  10. Choose "Command prompt only." from the list.
  11. Place the floppy with the unzipped BIOS files in your A: drive.
  12. Type "A:" to switch to the floppy drive.
  13. Type "updbios" <Enter>
  14. After the BIOS is flashed (it will tell you about the progress, plus some other information), power down the system.
  15. Remove the Matrox card, set the BIOS protect switch back to "protected." by setting the number 1 DIP switch to "OFF".
  16. Re-install the Matrox card, close the computer case and connect the monitor cable.
  17. Boot back up.
