CMS Jumbo 1400 Internal Tape Backup Unit

The following is a summary of the major issues reported by 10th Anniversary Club members concerning the CMS Jumbo 1400 Internal Tape Backup Unit (CMS 1400 TBU). Please read the disclaimer and use agreement before proceeding!

Note: The 10th Anniversary system will be referred to as the "P133A" in this document. All trademarks and registered trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

ISSUE SUMMARY

The CMS 1400 TBU was available as an add-on component for the P133A. The primary problem reported by members was that a Windows 95 version of the Colorado Backup software was not included when the P133A systems began shipping. Instead, some members received DOS and Windows 3.1 versions. A Windows 95 version of Colorado Backup software may be available for download from the HP-CMS web site (see below).

It should also be noted that the retail version of the CMS 1400 TBU includes an FC20 high speed controller. The version of the CMS 1400 TBU that shipped with the P133A did not include this controller. According to HP-CMS, the "FC20 controller card can reduce some systems backup time in half by doubling performance up to 9.5MB per minute. It is a 2Mb/s high performance floppy controller card with a 16-bit ISA interface."

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

If you purchased the CMS 1400 TBU and are not satisfied with the software that was provided, you may want to upgrade to the latest version of the Colorado Backup software or other backup utility that supports the CMS 1400 TBU.

Alternatively, the backup software that is part of Windows 95 can be used with the CMS 1400. This software, however, does not support the FC20 controller, lacks the tape rename, secure erase, tape retension, unerase and scheduler features found in CBW '95. Note that Microsoft has released an update to this utility called "Backup Update to Service Pack 1. According to Microsoft:

"This component gives slight performance improvements over the released version of the Windows 95 backup application. This update also guards against an user erasing media improperly by disabling the "Erase Tape" command when backing up to floppy disks or to another hard disk. This update also fixes an "out of memory" issue that may be encountered when restoring data. This update does not add any support for additional devices that were not supported in the original version of the Windows 95 Backup application.

All users of the Windows 95 backup application should obtain this updated component."

The updated file can be downloaded from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wurecommended/s_wuservicepacks/w95backupupdate/default.asp?site=95

HOW CAN YOU DO IT?

According to the HP web site, "Colorado Backup for DOS (CBD), Windows (CBW), and Windows 95 software packages have been discontinued."  At the time of this writing, it still appears you can download the software from this site, however:

Hewlett Packard is now selling Colorado Backup II, which is described at:

An FC20 high speed controller card can be purchased through regular retail outlets.

OTHER INFORMATION

Some members reported difficulties with using QIC-80 tapes and with formatting of the QIC-3020 tapes. QIC-80 tapes are compatible for reading NOT writing purposes with the HP-CMS 1400. The drive should be able to restore from QIC-80 tapes at a rate of at least 5 MB per minute. QIC-3020 tapes supplied by GW were formatted. Only defective machines did not recognize the tapes as formatted. Formatting a tape requires about 5 to 6 hours and the machine should have no other activity during that time and all energy-saving features and screensavers should be disabled. This is best done overnight.

Support information for CBW'95 is located on the HP website at http://www.hp.com/isgsupport/cms/cbw95.html
