Velvet Goldmine pretty_ak (32/F/ALASKA) 10/3/01 7:50 pm I have a vital need to tell you all about this movie. I may or may not have done so before. First off, though, let me tell you this. Perhaps this is something that everyone else already knew or is readily apparent by sight .. but I am incredibly dense in these matters due to an almost complete blackout of information relating to Ireland and things Irishy as I was growing up. So ... I was pleasantly surprised to find it is so. Only .. I think he's, like , the babe from HELL ... too fine for mortal beasts .. and ... and .. and my ex'anything always gave me hell about how I am attracted to Irishmen - usually unintentionally, to the point where if I took a strong liking to anything they could rest assured it had something to do with Ireland whether or no I knew it .. and if any of them find out about this they will give me endless hell and question me again as to what the hell is so special about the Irish. Hmmm .. then I suppose I shall refer them to the pic and if they still don't get it, I will slap them to death out of sheer pity. And this is what Velvet Goldmine is. A visually stunning, incredibly tasty piece of slash fanfiction. But instead of Kirk & Spock or Mulder & Krycek, it's someone who's a lot like David Bowie and someone who's a lot like Iggy Pop. Perhaps that appeals to you. Perhaps it doesn't. But despite its fanfiction feeling, this movie is absolutely visually stunning. The imagery will last with you long after you leave the movie, your eyes blinking as you adjust to a rather grey drab world. The movie isn't about substance, it's about style; about creating and rearranging yourself to fit the time, to fit the world around you. It's about fluidity, fluidity of gender, personality, ideas, and romance. Because, like all Slash fanfiction, above everything else, it's a love story.j and here's a better one: BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television) winner for best costume. Winner of Best Artistic Contribution at Cannes Film Festival. I saw the movie because it was recommended by several friends- both on-line and in real life-, Christian Bale and Ewan McGregor are good actors, I like off-beat movies, and Britain has produced some excellent films during the last few years. I was not sure if I would like the movie. Glam Rock was a few years before my time and the reviews of the movie are mixed between those who call it one of the best movies of the decade and those who hate it. I think it was very good, but it also had weaknesses. It is a better movie on subsequent viewings. Short summary: Oscar Wilde, delivered by a UFO, announces that he wants to be a pop star. Ten years after Glam Rock star Brian Slade- loosely based on David Bowie- fakes his own assassination on stage, journalist Arthur Stuart investigates what happened to him. Stuart talks to Mandy Slade, Brian's ex-wife, Cecil, Slade's first manager, and Curt Wild, Brian's American spiritual twin based loosely on Iggy Pop. During his investigation, he is forced to confront his own involvement in the Glam Rock scene and with Curt Wild. "Velvet Goldmine" is rated R and contains mature subject matter. The (Very) Good: The acting was excellent. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers was amazing as Brian Slade and Slade's alter ego Maxwell Demon. Ewan McGregor was electrifying as Curt Wild. Christian Bale was convincing as Arthur Stuart, the journalist investigating what happened to Brian Slade. Playing reserved characters well is difficult. All three actors took risks and it paid off. The costuming was amazing. The music was good and McGregor and Rhys-Myers did some of their own vocals. Toni Collette was good as Mandy Slade. She possessed the right amount of maturity and innocence and of idealism and bitterness. The soundtrack is especially good. The cinematography was beautiful. I have always been partial to flashbacks. The movie works better if you view it as a moving picture and art as much as a traditional plot driven movie. The Bad: The plot was a bit confusing. Sometimes it was hard to tell whether the events were "real". It was Haynes' intent to leave some mystery surrounding Slade, but it still felt a bit unsatisfying. Like Glam Rock, the movie was image over substance. More importantly this movie is not for everyone. If you want mainstream, safe, brainless, violence, and happy endings or are homophobic and plan to stay narrow-minded, skip it. The Ugly: Nothing….
