Background: Hoshi is an extremely talented linguist who speaks many languages, and can pick up a new one in a matter of days, or even hours if pressed. She was working as a language teacher on Earth when Captain Archer persuaded her to join the Enterprise on its mission to explore space further than mankind ever had before.
She was reluctant at first, but the lure of all the new languages and cultures she would be able to experience proved too strong to ignore.
As well as being responsible for virtually all communications with alien races, Hoshi is a versatile and resourceful crewmember, taking over cooking duties in the absence of the chef, and even turning spy in order to give Malcolm Reed a birthday surprise. However, she lacks confidence in her own abilities, and is more than a little afraid of some of the new and strange things they encounter.
