Is the Mythology Back?

The episode of April 8th, 2001, raises the question -- is the Mythology back too, revived along with Mulder?

THE MYTHOLOGY: ALIVE AND WELL?

With Mulder returned alive and well, and even an appearance by the Lone Gunmen, who got a vacation from their own show to drop in, The X-Files is back and running at full throttle -- with, of course, one extra factor: Dogget. How does the new agent, not so new anymore after half a season with the series, fit in now? Mulder clearly doesn't trust him.... On the other hand, Dogget doesn't seem like a bad guy and he certainly didn't want Absolom to get shot. He even mentioned this view to Skinner, saying how the guards inside the Census building, armed like storm troopers, didn't give the prophet a chance to even identify himself.

Tonight's ep (April 8th, 2001) in which Mulder confronted Dogget, and broke into the census building, is the most recent development in a series of episodes getting away from the "freak-of-the-week" stand-alone episodes that have composed much of this season, and moving slowly towards the more traditional area of mythology episodes.

The Myhtology, or continuing, overall plot development, of the X-Files is its unifying theme, the thread that pulls it all together -- though much could be said about how the stand-alone eps provide a break in the topic of alien conspiracies and help broaden the series horizons. Many stand-alone episodes are excellent in themselves, providing suspense (such as "Irrisistible"), horror (as in "Home"), and great sci-fi thrills involving topics other than extra-terrestrial life (such as in "Kill Switch"). In recent years there have also been more than a few doses of humor (such as in "Bad Blood" and "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas") -- in addition to dream-sequence episodes (such as the time-travel piece "Triangle").

Mulder: Back from the dead!

Scully: Pregnant with alien?

But the mythology episodes, which move the series along it's overall development, are key points. Typically they begin and end each season, with only a few in between, but as Season 8 moves along one thing is becoming clear: We can expect more Mythology eps on the way. Mulder has returned, agent Reyes may be back, and Kirsch has something up his sleeve. And then, of course, there's the enigma of Scully's baby. Is it human? Alien? Who is the father? It was hinted that Mulder donated sperm, but if so did it take or is he not the father? [And though not directly in line with the mythology topic, many shippers must be wondering: have there been any romantic relations between the two agents? The series has hinted at this and even shown them very close a couple of times since the movie but the fact is we've yet to directly view an overtly romantic moment between the two.] And Scully's baby bring up another question: What role will it have in the mythology? Is it an innocent child, or a genetic stepping stone to alien colonization? And how does Dogget's source fit into things? Hopefully we will get answers. Because....

The Mythology is back!
