SCENE 1:

READER- It was one day before Christmas, and in Santa’s Shop,
The elves were exhausted,
They were ready to drop.
All year they’d been working using every tool,
They’d been

1 SCOOTER- Hammering!

READER- And

2 TWINKLE- Painting!

READER- And

3 QUIGLEY- Sitting on my Stool!

4 SNICKER- A stool is not a tool!

1, 2, 4- Fool!

READER- So even though their responsibilities they never had shirked,
The Boss of the Elves yelled:

1-SCOOTER- Get back to work!

2-TWINKLE- But we’re done! Here it is: the last present! (holds up toy)
ELVES (angelic voice and gesture) Aaaaaah!

3-QUIGLEY- (reading from notepad)
364 days, 14 hours and 24 seconds! A new record!

4-SNICKER- We’re done! We’re done! It’s time to have fun! <

SANTA- Good work! ... Twinkle!

2-TWINKLE- Yes sir!

SANTA- Did you carry all the presents to the loading dock?

2-TWINKLE- I sure did! I put them in plastic garbage bags so they wouldn’t get wet!

SANTA- Very smart! Good work! ... Quigley!

(Quigley does not answer, is doing math on a notepad.)

EVERYONE- QUIGLEY!

3-QUIGLEY- (jumps-startled) Eeek! Where’s Quigley? Oh! I’m Quigley. Yes, Santa?

SANTA- Did you hitch up the reindeer and park the sleigh at the loading dock?

3-QUIGLEY- (squirms embarrassed)
Umm, .... not yet....

SANTA- Why not?

3-QUIGLEY- I was working on my invention! (Proudly pulls cloth off Duplicator and reads its label) This is the Amazing Duplicato-matic!

SANTA- That’s a good elf. Snicker!

4-SNICKER- Yes, Sir!

SANTA- Did you take out the recyclables? The recycle truck comes today.

4-SNICKER- I couldn’t! The loading dock was full of presents.

SANTA- ... The loading dock....

EVERYONE- The loading dock. Uh-oh.

READER
Yes, the recycle truck took those bags for a ride,
How could anyone tell there were presents inside?
Yes, those presents that took a whole year to make,
Took the recycle truck just 2 minutes to take,

RUDOLPH and all REINDEER ENTER excited)

RUDOLPH- Santa Santa! The reindeer are ready! Ready to go!

REINDEER- Thru the ice, sleet and snow!
Reindeer are ready! Ready to GO!
GO GO GO, GO GO GO!

ELVES (moan)

SANTA- I’m sorry, Rudolph. The presents have been lost. I’m afraid we’ll have to CANCEL CHRISTMAS!

REINDEER- Cocoa is ready! Ready to drink!
Drink drink drink, drink, drink, drink!

(RUDOLPH hands cups to fighting Twinkle and Snicker and the cups splash the Duplicator.
The Duplicator bounces.
LIGHTS FLICKER/ SOUND FX.)


SANTA- OH NO! Electrical short circuit! Everyone hit the deck!

(While ELVES & SANTA comfort Quigley...)

REINDEER 1- Why did Quigley's invention
REINDEER 2- make all that smoke and noise?
RUDOLPH- Maybe it just,
REINDEER 3- ran out of toys!

REINDEER- MORE TOYS!!!

(REINDEER carry box of toys and dump it in duplicator.
The Duplicator bounces.
Flashing lights. Sound FX.

EVERYONE Screams and PANICS.)

EXCITED Wake up! It’s Christmas!
SLEEPY What?
EXCITED Look presents!
SLEEPY What time is it?
EXCITED Open the presents! (hands Sleepy a present)

(Both open a present and pull out a very weird toy. Look at it with amazed horror, look at each other, look at the presents, then big smiles. Open another present- also a weird present.)

SLEEPY Wow!
EXCITED This is the best Christmas ever!
SLEEPY Open another!

(CURTAIN OPENS- SANTA’S WORKSHOP, no toys. Elves and Santa sit looking exhausted and sad.)

READER
While back at the reindeer ranch,
There was no happy noise,
As Elves and Santa,
Thought of those sad girls and boys.
And though the addition of reindeer, can make anything worse,
Sometimes the addition of reindeer, can be like lifting a curse.

SANTA- I never thought I'd say it , but Quigley--

ELVES & SANTA- You saved Christmas!

3-QUIGLEY- Don’t forget the reindeer!

SANTA Good work, Reindeer!

ELVES- Yay! Reindeer!

REINDEER Reindeer are ready! Ready to Go!
Go go go, Go go go!

(CURTAIN CLOSES.)

1 paint brushes for Twinkle
a tool for Snicker
a little notepad and pen or feather for Quigley
low work table for elves to stand at(2 card tables or a piano bench)
Christmas Tree
A stretch of moveable scenery (painted refrigerator box or 8 foot long stand up flat - to hide Christmas tree, and then to hide Dooplicator)
Fake Presents with lids that lift off, or open ends
Toys, including 4 identical soft toys
2 Weird Toys (make by combining parts of different toys)
