Disclaimer: I don't own Spike and Dru, they belong to Joss Whedon, the WB and Mutant Enemy.
Author's Notes: This story takes place after "Becoming, Part 2." It's my interpretation of how Spike and Dru fell apart.
Drusilla kept her eyes straight forward, trying not to listen to the new angle of the moon. She didn’t want to hear what it was whispering to her. It was mocking her, poking fun at what her and Spike had become. And Miss Edith, she was left behind. It was true that Miss Edith was a bad dolly. She often spoke out of turn. She sipped her tea when she wasn’t supposed to. But not even she deserved the fate of sitting alone in the warehouse, doomed to the mercy of the Slayer.
Spike sighed. “Alright, Pet." He called ahead. “Shall we find some locals?" Drusilla ignored him. “I know we just got here, but best to acquaint ourselves right away. We don't want this new place to end up a disaster like the last one, now do we?"
Drusilla whirled around. “No. The Slayer lives. Because you were careless. You thought you could outwit ‘er .." Dru grinned maliciously. “But there is no Slayer ‘ere." Spike rolled his eyes.
“That's right, Luv. No slayer to keep us down. We can 'ave the run of this place. Things can be the way they used to be. You an' me, rulin' over everyone else." Spike ran to catch up with her and took her hand into his. He placed a tender kiss upon her knuckle. “And you will be on a throne. I’ll worship you like before, Pet. I’ll give you everything you’ve ever wanted. An' more." Drusilla giggled softly.
“Oi’ll take what Oi want." She commented. Spike softly dropped her hand, not knowing how to respond. It was probably best that he just keep silent for now.
A man in tatters and rags passed by the two, holding a bottle of vodka. Spike tilted his head. Yeah, a drink would be nice, he thought. “Dru, are you hungry?" Drusilla glanced at the man. She was no fool.
“No, Oi’m not." She folded her arms stubbornly across her chest and looked at Spike, challenging him with her potent glare. He sighed wistfully. No, it wasn’t worth it. He shook off his aggravation and looked up at the crescent moon. The same moon that His Princess loved to listen to. The same moon that they used to make love under. The same moon he had been in love under; that he was still in love under. He looked at Dru again. She didn’t look happy. But, they had just arrived here not minutes ago. Things took time, he reminded himself. Drusilla took time. She’d be his again. He was sure of it.
Drusilla sighed. She turned around and began to walk forward once again. Spike followed.
A young girl brushed past them, and Dru smiled. “Excuse me .. " She said softly. The girl turned around, fearless. “Do you know where the cemetery is .. ?" Dru inquired. The girl looked confused.
“You know, the cemetery. Dead people, tombstones. . " Spike attempted to clarify. The girl’s face lit up.
“Oh, oh . ." She pointed forward. “Dead, turn. . " She searched for English words. “Place .." She twisted her finger to the right. Dru nodded in understanding.
“Thanks, mate." Spike said. But, no more Mr. Nice Spike, he promised himself. He came up behind the girl, and roughly snapped her neck. He let her body crumple to the ground, and looked up at Dru. He was hoping she’d smile back at him, proud of his wicked and unmerciful act. Instead, she merely nodded, and continued on her way.
They soon reached the graveyard. “Oooo o o . . " Dru said, and held out her arms palms up. Spike rushed to her side.
“What is it, Ducks? Do you feel something?" Drusilla turned to him and smiled.
“Oh yesss . . Oi feel it." She closed her eyes and softly hummed. Spike heaved his shoulders, ordering himself to be patient. She would tell him when she was ready. “Spirits .. they are ‘ere . ." She murmured. “Beggin' to be let out. But no one will save them .." She covered her mouth with her hand as she giggled. “An' a new one will be risin'.." That caught Spike’s attention.
“A new one, a new vampire?" He prodded.
“Yess. ." Drusilla walked the perimeter of the cemetery, temporarily pausing at each gravestone. Finally, she seemed to settle on one. She gently put her hand on top of it and shuddered. “’Ere .. he’s coming .. Oi can feel ‘im .." She exclaimed. Spike knelt down next to the gravestone as well, glancing over at Dru. Sure enough, they didn’t have to wait long.
The ground began to stir, and a hand broke through the surface. Dru squealed. Spike got up at stood back, but Dru didn’t. Instead, she took this new vampire’s hand. She grasped it tightly and helped pull him up. Spike frowned. Dru let go of his hand and allowed him to fully stand up, batting her eyelashes at him flirtatiously. He dusted himself off and shot his vamped gaze over to Spike.
“’Ello, mate." Spike said, taking in the sight of the new one. Not a bad looking fellow. He was buff, he had good hair, and Spike could tell right away that he already had an avid thirst for destruction. “Name’s Spike." The vampire cocked his head.
“Toby." He looked over at Drusilla, and immediately, his facial features softened. He whistled softly. “And you M'lady . .?"
“Drusilla .." She quoted. She sauntered back over to him and placed her hand on his chest. “MMmm .. Oi loike you." She ran her hands up his chest, over his abdomen, and then up to his neck. She leaned in close to him, pressing her body up against his seductively. “Mmm . .." Spike couldn’t watch this any more.
“Alright. Now that we’re properly acquainted, why don’t you tell us something about yourself." Drusilla stood back from him again, a silly grin on her face. She was clearly enjoying Spike’s jealousy. Toby looked over at Spike, confused still but quite bright. It wouldn’t take him long to piece together the details of his new life. Or lack thereof.
“You’re not from around here, are you?" He quipped. Spike rolled his eyes.
“No, mate we’re not. But judgin' from your accent, neither are you."
“I’m from America actually, I came over here a few years ago." Toby stretched out his limbs. “I, feel different." His dead eyes seemed to brighten. “But I like it." He smiled. “I like it a lot." Drusilla clapped her hands and grinned. “So you’re like me."
“Good eye, mate. Now, what me and Dru here need, is a place to stay. I know you’re new at the game and all,"
“I have a place."
“You know, you’ll have to put shades on all of your windows." Toby shuddered.
“The sun, the blasted sun, the thought of it makes my blood cold." He snickered. “Alright, colder." He turned his gaze back to Dru. “Follow me." Drusilla didn’t even look at Spike. She took hold of Toby’s hand, running her nail along the crevice of his finger. He chuckled, eyeing her up and down. Spike heaved a sigh, forcing himself to keep some self control.
Toby lead them through the small town to a cheap apartment complex. Spike rolled his eyes. “You know, us Vampires usually stay underground." Drusilla turned to Spike.
“Spoike . .Oi want an apartment. They’re so pret’y . .an' Toby ‘ere can ‘elp us decorate .. make it so noice. . mm .."
“Alright, Pet. Whatever you want." The thought of an apartment didn’t exactly appeal to Spike, but the way things were right now, he didn’t want to disagree with Dru. He had a lot of sucking up to do, it seemed.
The three vampires entered into the apartment. Dru wrinkled her nose and looked around in discouragement. “This place. ." She began to shake. “Oi can’t abide by it .. . Mmm .. " She complained. Spike rushed to her and patted her hand.
“Now luv, he Was a human, after all. I’m sure we can fix up this place, unless you want to look elsewhere." Spike was hoping she’d take the second option.
“Noo . .we live ‘Ere. Oi’ll make it noice. . an' pret’y." She smiled. “Oi’ll make it just loike Moi ‘ome." Toby stared at Dru with fascination and lust in his eyes, and Spike growled under his breath. He knew he wasn’t going to like this arrangement.
Drusilla rubbed her hands together and sighed. She looked over at Toby. “’Ave you fed yet?" She asked him. He looked at her, overwhelmed.
“No, I haven’t. I’ve been with you since I was turned." Dru squealed and clapped her hands. She went over to him and took his hand.
“We’ll get you a noice dinner.. mm . ." She looked back at Spike teasingly. “Ggrrarg!" All Spike could do was stare at her wide-eyed. “Are you goin' ta come with uss?" She asked him. His first impulse was to say no. He wasn’t sure that he could keep his temper down while Dru was flirting with the newbie, but then again he didn’t want to leave her alone with him either. Spike frowned and stood up. Dru smiled.
The three vampires walked out into the night again, tummies ready for a feeding. Toby looked over at Dru expectantly. “So," he quipped, making idle conversation. “How does blood actually taste?" Dru giggled, and her eyes sparkled with glee.
“Loike. . your favorite food when you were alive. The warm . .it runs down your throat .. making you gasp .. mm . ." Toby grinned from ear to ear.
“Tell me more." He said to her, tinking the tip of her nose with his index finger. Spike scowled.
“Alright Mate, let’s cut the idle chitchat, shall we? After all, we ‘ave a hunt to concentrate on." Toby looked over at Spike not quite challengingly, but certainly not with respect for what was his. Spike grimaced. He would like nothing more at this moment then to drive a stake through this creature’s freshly dead heart and watch that silly grin turn into a pile of soot, but Dru wouldn’t be happy with him. He couldn’t afford any more mistakes with her.
Toby’s head immediately shot up, and his facial expression turned confused. Dru cooed softly.
“Ooo oo . . you feel it, don’t you . ? MMm. . .? You can smell it .. taste it .." Toby looked at her intently.
“I sense something, but-"
“A person’s nearby. It’s bleedin . . waitin' for you . . mm . ." Toby grinned again and looked ahead. A dissevered looking girl was stumbling along a bit ahead of them. Her clothes were torn from her body and she was limping badly, blood dripping from one of her legs. Drusilla smiled back at him, and fell back towards Spike. “Go on .. take your first bite." She said to him. He turned around and straightened his shoulders. Spike gently gripped Dru’s arm and pulled her close to him, inhaling her sweet scent. He was hoping she would cuddle up to him, but she was too intent on watching Toby.
Toby slowly walked up behind the girl and sighed. She whirled around. Drusilla strained her neck, trying to hear. Toby made his first mistake; he immediately vamped out. The girl screamed loudly and scampered away from him in shock and fear. Toby’s confident smirk left him, and he began to panic. He ran after the girl and grabbed a hold of her arm. She raved on like a banshee and madly clawed at his grip. Toby grimaced but determinedly held on, reeling her in closer to him. She tried to use her free hand to claw at his face, but he was one step ahead of her this time. Toby grabbed her arm with his free hand, and brought his new fangs down upon her neck. He sunk them in and began to drink.
Drusilla smiled at Spike. “See.. ‘e’s learnin .." She told him.
“Yes, Pet he is. But he’s nothing special." Dru backed away from Spike a pace.
“Oi loike ‘im .. . " She pouted. Spike sighed and put his arms around her.
“I know you do, Pet. But, you like your Daddy better, don’t you?" Dru froze, a glazed over expression took over her eyes. “Pet?" Spike asked again.
Dru turned to him, a false smile crossing over her lips. “Oi luv you . ." She responded, refusing to meet his potent stare. All he could do was hold her tighter. She was here in body, but her emotions were somewhere else. And that scared him. A lot.
Toby sauntered back over to Spike and Dru, grinning. Drusilla weaseled herself out of Spike’s hold and smiled at Toby. “Did you loike it . .?" She asked him.
Toby licked his lips. “Yeah, I did. You were right. It tasted, really good. Like I couldn’t get enough."
“Yeah, mate. It’s like that at first." Toby shot a disapproving glance at Spike, but turned his eyes immediately back over at Dru. Taking her in, looking over every inch of her slender body. Spike narrowed his eyes.
Toby cleared his throat and took a pace backwards. “So, ready to go home?" Spike and Dru shared an amused glance.
“Yeah, mate. Let’s go home." Spike said, and they walked off into the distance.
