Nathan Ramsey, the easily-provoked and bombastic security chief of Backstep, is a thorn in the side of the more free-spirited team members. His constant bickering and poking at chrononaut Frank Parker has become more spirited and imaginative over time.
Ramsey's personality was partially shaped by an abusive father, whose effects are shown in his methods. He has a brother as well, who was permanently warped by the experiences. As a result, Ramsey rarely shows genuine emotion and has a regrettable temper. He also has little tolerance for pacifists or "Ruskies," and great respect for military leaders.
Ramsey fast-tracked to the position of Deputy Director of Information in the CIA, after being part of the elite of that group. His relentless drive makes rivals but, fortunately, very few real enemies. He joined Operation Backstep, but was irritated when a former mental patient, Frank Parker, was chosen to be the chrononaut. In one timeline, Ramsey overdosed on stim pills and ended up attacking the Sphere, with Parker only seconds from launch.
Though the damage was undone in the next timeline, Parker remains a source of annoyance for Ramsey, with his wild ways and peculiar sense of humor. Nevertheless, Ramsey is angered when Parker is ill-treated by others. He owns a dog and a cat, and apparently lavishes them with great affection.
