A steady, intelligent former Navy SEAL and CIA Special Ops Officer, Craig Donovan is the "perfect soldier." Loyal and dutiful, he has black belt in several martial arts, making him a formidable fighter. At the same time, he has a wry sense of humor and a willingness to goof off that make him endearing.
Donovan was raised in a normal middle-class family, in contrast to the background of his best friend. His parents and younger sister Tracey apparently live in Washington. In one timeline, Tracey was murdered and Donovan took revenge on the drug dealers who had killed her.
Donovan, acting as the backup-man for Backstep, was essential in Frank Parker's acceptance. When doubt set it as to whether Parker was sufficiently sane for such vital missions, Donovan vouched for his friend and stood up constantly until Frank's mental health was in no more doubt.
Donovan wishes (and patiently waits) for a chance to Backstep on his own, but has yet to be sent on a mission. Jealousy has not entered his friendship with Frank Parker, with whom he shares a brotherly bond.
