Boone and Lili are at the Flat Planet Cafe for the beginning of the World Bowl, when the sports broadcasts are shut off by an electrifying speech by Jonathan Doors, who states that there is an organized Liberation movement, and advises the world to keep an open mind. Boone is irritated by Doors's lack of communication with them.
The Synod become angry with Da'an, who is being blamed for not realizing that Doors was still alive. Boone and Lili track the signal from Doors to a satellite broadcast center, just as Sandoval shows up. A recorded message from Doors appears on their globals, telling them not to go toward the trailers, which promptly explode.
Boone and Sandoval arrive at the Embassy, just as Da'an is forced to step down from his position in favor of a younger, more arrogant Taelon named Zo'or. Boone chafes under Zo'or's mocking replies as Sandoval reports that they were unable to track Doors. Meanwhile, Augur is desperately seeking Doors under Boone's instructions.
Shortly thereafter, incriminating pictures of experiments gone awry are handed to the press, angering Zo'or. He quickly has reporters go to Doors International's Futurity Farms, a facility used for genetic engineering. Corporate Executive Anne Portnoy proudly shows a genetically-engineered cow to the reporters, who produces ten times the milk in half the time.
Approval for the Taelons goes back up, and Lili is upset. She and Boone conspire to oust Zo'or while making Da'an look good.
Boone and Augur set up evidence that Anne Portnoy is attending secret meetings with Doors, gleefully arranging it for Sandoval, who tells Zo'or and plans a raid on Futurity Farms to capture Doors.
Boone goes to speak to the withdrawn Da'an, who now spends his time in the Embassy gardens, and advises him that certain actions are not wise. Da'an is dubious, but warns Zo'or that the plan will not work. Zo'or ignores him.
The raid takes place, but Doors is nowhere to be seen, and Zo'or has been humiliated in the eyes of the Synod. At the same time, Da'an appears insightful and more cautious. He is given back his position, and speaks briefly with Boone about the interests of both humans and Taelons.
Boone and Lili are summoned to the church of St Michael's, where an old woman directs them to a hidden elevator in the basement before revealing herself to be Belman. Boone and Lili step out into a subterranean hideout, where Doors has been hiding. Augur is also revealed to be a Resistance member.
