This site is great for use as a guide when customizing your Futura. My first mission was to obtain either the original Revell Lincoln Futura Model Kit Circa 1956 or the easier NOS Re-issue kit #1270 from 1995. EBAY was a good place to start!!! The interior was my starting point. I used all of the stock futura parts with some minor customizing. This was because George Barris used most of the original interior from the prototype Lincoln. I used very thin sheet plastic to cover over the stock gauge and instrument clusters and half round to give the dash it's unique Batmobile design. All in all this worked well. More half round was used to give the flat interior door moldings a raised look, this also helped to lock in the interior to the cockpit. By this I mean that I over extended the moldings on the doors enough so that they fit snuggly under the dash and where able to be glued to the kick panels.

INTERIOR...

After priming I painted the dash and interior Krylon Ultra-Flat Black, I used Baremetal Foil overlay to make the dash ribs more prominent. Then I used thinned out flat black on a cotton swab to fill in the creases between the ribs. This gave the dash more dimension. When finished I wiped the excess off the foil with a clean swab leaving it between the half round only. Although the original batmobile had a smaller looking scale than this, I still liked the outcome. You can go nuts with the detail, but in my experience I had better results making the detail a little more simplified. With less equipment that had better detail the model car was easier to look at!!!

TWO PRIORITIES...

To keep the heavily worked body away from the interior I cut out the bottom of the chassis using the Dremel with a 2 3/8" x 1 7/8" rectangle. I also built a ledge out of .020" sheet styrene to so that the piece of chassis that was removed would now have something to attach to when re-installed. Make sure you test fit the interior on top of the chassis section to check its alignment with the top half of the body before cutting. I also fabricated wheel wells on the chassis section (lower half)with .020" styrene. The steering wheel was cut into a half round one which is true to the original Batmobile.

RESIN KIT...

Below check out the link to Skyhook Models for resin conversion kit (Pictured on the right)and you can see that the parts have a pretty good fit to start with, but don't let this fool you. You will still need to keep your contours with the existing body panels!!! CLICK NEXT..
