Use of Insects as Food.

A random sample of 402 people at Amphur Jaehom Chang Wat Lampang were presented with specimens of 128 insect species, which known edible insect together. They were asked which species they consumed as food. The number 18, 10, 15, 39 and 46 species were eaten by 75-100, 51-75, 26-50, 1-25 and less than 1 percent respectively of the people questioned. In the age range 26-60, 15-25 and 6-14 years, 53, 20 and 17 percent respectively of those people questioned ate insects. Annual income was another factor influencing insect consumption. In the income ranges 0, less than 2500-5000 more than 5000 Bahts per year 36, 22, 24 and 18 percent respectively of people questioned ate insects. There was little difference between sexes, with 52 percent of males and 48 percent of females eating insects.
