HISTORY: Shakespeare inhabits Middleverse, a parallel dimension to our world. Middleverse's answer to mutants are beings called Mystiks, of which Shakespeare is one. Shakespeare captured and enslaved Middleverse's most powerful Mystik, a being known as the Summoner who had the power to create targeted interdimensional portals.

The Summoner created a random portal in a bid to free himself from Shakespeare, and the portal transported X-Women Shadowcat, Beast, Rogue, Gambit and Nuclear to Middleverse. They fought Shakespeare in his Tolkien-esque castle Grey Keep, and Gambit succeeded in destroying the amplification device Shakespeare used to enhance his powers. Bereft of most of the minions he had fabricated with his powers, Shakespeare was thrust through a portal by the Summoner, ending his reign over Middleverse forever.
